Travel from Milan to Nice and back

by cl3150

I am traveling from Milan to Nice in early May and returning to Milan after 5 days. The only flights I find have connections, mostly through other countries, and the train schedule doesn't look much better. Is there a reasonable and efficient way to travel between Milan and Nice?

There is a direct train, with no changes, leaving at 11.10, taking just under 5 hours (it is a long way!). There is another at 15.10, and other in between with just one change.

http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

for train times and details in English and

www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html for train times, details and fares in English.

Standard second-class fare on the direct 11.10 is 30 euro, which isnot to be sniffed at.

Italian trains are safe, comfortable and easy (as it buying tickets, because ticket machines have English options).

www.skyscanner.net will give you flight options, but even if you find a direct flight I doubt it will be much quicker once you have taken into account travel to/from airports and check-in/baggage reclaim time. It will certainly be more expensive.

How about renting a car? I'm pretty sure it won't take more than 5 hours to go from Milan to Nice. I live in Turin, which is sort of in the middle of the two cities and it's about 2 hours from Milan and 2 hours from Nice.

I wouldn't say Italian train system is reliable. Once I went to Milan by train and on the way back, the train got stuck in the middle of no where and did not move for about 1 hour. The delays are very common. Of course, car could be stuck in traffic jam, but if I were you, I'd rent a car...

I've done this trip once in a car and once by train and if I were to do it again, I would choose the train. If memory serves me correctly, the only change I had to make was in Nice coming from Cannes and the rest was direct. As has been pointed out already, the train will be by far your cheapest option. In my opinion, flying this relatively short hop would be a bit silly I think for all the reasons already mentioned. For instance, the airports used by budget carriers in and out of Milan are a long way out of Milan and are very time consuming to get to and from. Trains pick you up in the centre of the city and drop you off in the centre of the city, with no luggage restrictions and no queues for security checks etc. It is also a beautiful scenic trip in many parts, which you will miss if you fly. Car is fine but very much more expensive.

Unless you have some plans to stop somewhere along the way, I have to go with the train.

Ask www.viamichelin.com to plot the route...you'll notice that they estimate 24 euro for the tolls and 30.95 euro for the gas...and this is BEFORE you pay for a rent car(!) on a daily basis. Hmmmn, makes 30 euro each way look a whole lot better, doesn't it?

I was surprised that viamichelin did suggest that the drive would be only 3 hours and 10 minutes - well, it's only 315 kilometers and you average 100 kph on the highways (if you obey the speed limit, that is ;-) ). However, the odds of hitting a lot of traffic here or there are pretty good, especially near Milan.
