This is the wonderful Porta Nuova. Originally known as the Porta della Rocca during the 19th century.
Today it's known by locals as the moat, though previous to that is was the Watchtower Gate because of a clock in a nearby fortification. Immediately behind the entry is a small piazza with lanes leading off in different directions. The road on the right is split by a traffic island and leads to the lakeside.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II is a wide square with interesting Art Nouveau palaces. In the middle of the square you can see the nice white facade of the Chiesa della Visitazione (Church of the Visitazione) built in 1712 by the architect Antonio Spiazzi.
Salò is a little village of 9,000 inhabitants in the east area of Lombardy and rises on its own gulf on the west coast of the Garda Lake. And from the middle of its gulf started the earthquake that in fall october 2004 brought to collapse many houses...but they were soon rebuilt!
Salò is a very quiet village where to relax and spend your holidays: in fact many german tourists go there all year long due to its very mild climate.
