Travel Tips for Salò

Local council

by iandsmith

I parked my car out in front of the local council building, not its more famous cousin down by the lake but still a pleasant enough edifice with a small fountain and park and it is also adjacent to the Botanical Gardens.

Lungolago Zanardelli

by Cristian_Uluru

Lungolago Zanardelli is the promenade of the town. Along its side you can find interesting Art Nouveau palace built after the heartquake of 1911. One the best is the one above Gelateria del Golfo: as you can see by the photos it has got the facade and the windows show beautiful decorations of flowers and garlands.

Passageway

by croisbeauty

Due to a configuration of the place, there are a number of such a narrow and pretty much low passageways which connects streets and the part of the village built up on the hillside. Some of the passageways, like this one on the picture, are in particularly beautiful.

Salo

by nighthawk

Salo is situated in the gulf of Salo, has had political and economical control over the coastal towns since Roman times.
In 1943 Mussolini fled here and rebuilt his fascist party here, thus forming an italian fascist government which held for two years.
When the allied freed Italy, Mussolini tried to escape to Switzerland but was caught and shot at Lake Como in April 1945.

Signs of former prosperity and importance can still be found in Salo. It has a beautiful lakeside promenade.

It is not sure how Salo got his name. According to a legend Queen Salonina gave her name to the town or an Etrusk magistrate named Saloo.
Beatrice Scala, wife of count Bernabo, wanted to make Salo capital of the ' Magnifica Patria' in 1377. She had a new citadel built (nothing remained of it).
Gasparo Bartoletti (1540-1609), the man who most likely developed the first violin was born in Salo.
