Heavenly Lakeside Retreat
As our coach pulled up just outside the walls of the old town of Sirmione I was delighted to realise that the pretty terracotta and yello building sitting on the lake beside the castle was our hotel.
Crossing the moat by taxi we checked in and were met by a very helpful and friendly staff.
We had booked a twin room and a single room and I have to be very honest and say that I was really disappointed in the size of my single room. It must rank as the smallest hotel room I ever stayed in. My narrow single bed started at the top of one wall and the foot of it touched another. To sit on the toilet one has to sit sideways and the shower was tiny, causing me to squeeze between the doors to get in and it was your tough luck if you dropped the soap as you hadn't much of a hope of picking it up.
Other than that the room was well furnished with a large built in vanity unit and some of the most adequate wardrobe storage space I have ever come across.
Linen is changed daily, towels twice a day, and a lovely nightly turndown service where they would leave a heart shaped chocolate by my bed.
Unique Quality: The food is wonderful at this hotel, with a five course dinner each evening with generous menu choice. They really put themselves out to ensure the menu is varied and different and they use unusual ingredients. Waotong staff are efficient and pleasant, though be warned that lunch service is more than a little slow.
The hotel has its own thermal swimming pool with sulphurous waters which delighted those seeking their benefits, but which I found too hot on the hot days.
The sunset view from the deck outside the bar is very difficult to beat.
