    Heavenly Lakeside Retreat

    by

As our coach pulled up just outside the walls of the old town of Sirmione I was delighted to realise that the pretty terracotta and yello building sitting on the lake beside the castle was our hotel.

Crossing the moat by taxi we checked in and were met by a very helpful and friendly staff.

We had booked a twin room and a single room and I have to be very honest and say that I was really disappointed in the size of my single room. It must rank as the smallest hotel room I ever stayed in. My narrow single bed started at the top of one wall and the foot of it touched another. To sit on the toilet one has to sit sideways and the shower was tiny, causing me to squeeze between the doors to get in and it was your tough luck if you dropped the soap as you hadn't much of a hope of picking it up.

Other than that the room was well furnished with a large built in vanity unit and some of the most adequate wardrobe storage space I have ever come across.

Linen is changed daily, towels twice a day, and a lovely nightly turndown service where they would leave a heart shaped chocolate by my bed.

Unique Quality: The food is wonderful at this hotel, with a five course dinner each evening with generous menu choice. They really put themselves out to ensure the menu is varied and different and they use unusual ingredients. Waotong staff are efficient and pleasant, though be warned that lunch service is more than a little slow.

The hotel has its own thermal swimming pool with sulphurous waters which delighted those seeking their benefits, but which I found too hot on the hot days.

The sunset view from the deck outside the bar is very difficult to beat.

Directions: As you go through the entrance to the walled town, take the first left and the hotel is there on the right and on the left.

Nice view on the lake and the harbour

    by

I never stayed in this hotel. But as far i could notice , entering the hotel till the reception,
the hotel consists out of two buildings. The reception and staff were very helpfull in showing us the right direction to the entrance of the harbour where we had to catch the boat for the islands.
I think the price must be about € 850 for a fourthnight during season.
I think a recommendable hotel for a romantic stay.

Unique Quality: Seems that this area is welknown for it's drinking water qualities (Termes)
Unfortunally i found had no time to drink water, or is wine also water ? LOL

Directions: At the entrance, opposite the castle

Watch the sun setting over the lake

by SabrinaSummerville

Sirmione is a promonitory surrounded on three sides by Lake Garda and so it is a terrific place to watch the sun set from many vantage points throughout the town.

My favourite sunset spot was from the deck over the lake at the Hotel Sirmione.

However, I also found some good spots at the cul de sacs fronting the lake throughout the old town. These areas usually have walls at the end of them where people stop to watch the birds, the sunset, and.....eat ice cream:-)

Ferry Across the lake

by SabrinaSummerville

There is a wonderful ferry service which takes passengers to and from the various beautiful towns around the lake.

A rather complicated free timetable is available at the reception of all hotels, and also at the brown ticket office located beside the ferry terminal. There are three types of ferry - the fast one, the normal (slow) one, and a vehicular or commercial ferry and the times for all three are on the timetable.

It's great for tourists to use to travel from one port to another close by, but if you want to travel from, say, Sirmione to Riva keep in mind that the slow ferry takes four hours in either directioon so you might be better off taking a bus for long lake distances.

I really strongly recomment taking the ferry at some stage of your trip - we travelled from Garda to Riva and back four years ago and this time we took the shorter trip from Riva to Limone. Bring your camera and watch out for spectacular scenery.

In Sirmione the ferry dock is situated just inside the entrance to the walled old town beside the hotel Sirmione in the Piazza Carducci.
