I was told that to catch the boat which travels slowly all around the lake, we need to go to Desenzano. Which town is correct? Sirmoine or Desenzano?

Both are... correct... Where will be you? Do you just want to move from where youa re to desenzano in a nice way, or do yu want to spend all the day on the ferry to see also the upper lake?

Thanks for your reply. We currently are planning on driving from Padua to either Desenzano or Sirmoine. We would like to just jump on a boat and travel slowly around the entire lake getting off and on as we wish. Another option if this might take to long since we will only be around the lake for this one day is to travel half the lake and on our way back through after a trip to the Dolomites staying in Bolzano overnight, we could do the other half of the lake at that time? Your thoughts, please Bill
Hi, After reviewing the boat schedule both fast and slow, it doesn't seem like it's possible to cruise the whole lake in one day, so we are planning on just going from Desenzano/Sirmione to Gardone and Garda this trip. If you had a choice, would you drive into Sirmione or Desenzano and pick up the boat? Also since it will take about 3 to 4 hours to drive back and forth to Padua we have started also looking into taking the train? Can you also point me in the right direction for the trains? Train from Padova to Desenzano is about an hour, although you could also get off at Peschiera and catch the boat there.
If you have time Malchesine is worth it on a clear day as the cable cars will take you up Monte Baldo for spectacular views. Lazise is a nice town too.

Well this view from the plane on our way back to the Uk shows how Sirmione lies on a long thin peninsula jutting out into Lake Garda between Desenzano and Peschiera.
How come whenever we get a window seat on the plane its right by the wing :-S
At the end of the peninsula you can find this large roman villa. There is a museum where they show some of the objects founded on site and you can walk around the different areas. Some of them are under reconstruction.
