More about Grand Hotel Tremezzo

The Fabulous Grand Hotel Tremezzo Palace

by TripAdvisor Member bobbieweid

We were able to spend a perfect week at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in October. The staff was wonderful to us and the rooms were spectacular. Definitely chose the Lake Front rooms.

The restaurant was always a great experience and the food delicious. They reserved a table for us for the duration of our stay. We had driven from Milan in a thunderstorm and arrived at the hotel to learn they had reserved our table for dinner (it was past 9:00 p.m. and we were tired and hungry).

The management, dining staff and housekeeping staff could not have been more first rate.

We will definitely make the effort to return.

This hotel is truly five star and almost one that you would like to keep a secret; however, like the good things in life, it is worth sharing.

Great Hotel - Not so Great Service or Food

by TripAdvisor Member krigreen1

We stayed in the Grand Hotel Tremezzo for three nights during our honeymoon. We absolutely loved the beauty of the hotel and it's surroundings. We had a lake view room with balcony which was spectacular. The gardens and grounds in the back of hotel were awesome. Our room was perfect - beautiful high ceilings - nice bathrooms. The pool floating on the lake was also wonderful.

HOWEVER, we were very disappointed with the hotel service and the restaurant. The staff was not friendly, in fact they were outright rude, and not helpful at all. Our experience at the restaurant was the same at with the service- we were ignored at dinner, the waiters were not nice, and the food was not good.

Fantastic - but you NEED to choose the right room

by TripAdvisor Member juliannac

The Hotel Tremezzo is absolutely georgeous - if you stay in the larger rooms facing the lake. There is SUCH a difference! Of course it costs more but you either need to stay in the right rooms at this hotel or dont stay there at all. We spent one night in a small room facing the pool and were miserable until we agreed to pay more and stay in a large room facing the lake and wow - what a difference! The food is not that special but Como is so stunning. I love this area of Italy. I am a very demanding traveler who has stayed in some of the best hotels in the world and this one is worth the visit. The pool was also lovely but boating around the lake was breathtaking.

absolutely fabulous

by TripAdvisor Member rita79

stayed in the hotel for three nights and it was absolutely fabulous..Highly recoomend the restaurant and breakfast was good too. The setting is spectacular and get the rooms with the lake view. Worth the extra price. The gardens are beautiful and close to the ferry points....all in all the most beautiful place in europe.

Just OK

by A TripAdvisor Member

My Husband and I visited this hotel in March. The hotel was more like 3.5 – 4 star. It was clean, spacious, and had wonderful views. I joined the hotels “club” on line. This club offers you a chocolate surprise when you enter the room w/ a free upgrade for a lake view. When you walk into the hotel the main floor is a delight w/ 5 star charms. BUT when you arrive in the room it is like an out dated “Ramada Inn”. I was so disappointed. The upgraded view was very nice but the room was not what was advertised. So to conclude the plus side: main floor, gardens, staff, cleanliness, great breakfast and wonderful views. The negative side: not worth the price, outdated rooms, and located right on a main road.

Edwardian charm and plumbing

by A TripAdvisor Member

Although located on the main road alongside the lake this was not a problem. The public areas have been refurbished and they are large, high ceilinged and attractive. The guest rooms have the limitations imposed on efforts to modernise 1900's accommodation, particularly the bathrooms, but if you are not fussy about the shower and lack of bath you can manage your ablutions satisfactorally. Wonderful views over the lake. Food OK.
Dont take any notice of dress code for dinner as anything goes, but most adopt smart casual. Proximity to the boarding point for lake boat trips and the ferry to Bellagio is a very useful feature as there is little to do in the immediate locality. The garden is magnificent but something of a climb and provides tennis swimming and relaxation. All in all the hotel has a faded charm common to most around the lake

Very nice stay at GHT....

by TripAdvisor Member sarman

We stayed at the GHT 3 nights, from July 3rd - July5th 2005. Our room was #406, a corner room which the hotel designates as "deluxe". Distinguishing this room from the lake-front superior room was about 80 EU's a night price difference and the following:
1. Our room had a large, sunny bathroom with a beautiful view up the lake,
and was in good repair.
2. We had the same small balcony as the superior rooms, with the addition
of a set of French doors on the corner side for a somewhat 180
degree view. (the views were beautiful...)
3. the room itself was a bit larger then the superior (maybe 20%) - (we did peek into a superior for comparison) and had an extra chair for relaxing.

If this is worth an extra 80 EU's a night for you, fine - we felt we would have been just as happy in a lake-view superior, but I'm not complaining.
We liked the ambience of the hotel, and found the staff to be helpful and courteous. Breakfast was very good, but a times, the waiters seemed over-whelmed.... don't let it bother you.
We didn't dine in the hotel's restaurant - it looked very nice though. Instead, we opted for the restaurants 5 minutes walk up the road from the hotel. We especially liked Helvetia, with good pastas and wine, and freindly staff - good value too.

I hate to break from the flock, but we didn't really enjoy Bellagio - I guess after reading all the glowing reviews about the place, I didn't know what to expect - many people have called it one of the top five most beautiful spots in Europe - makes me wonder just how much of Europe they have seen. Anyhow, if you like sitting around or strolling the streets with throngs of tourists, looking at store after store selling things you don't need (and probably don't want), then this is your place. We much preferred Varenna.

All in all, give the GHT a look if you are planning a trip to the area - we very much enjoyed our stay.

A Room with a stupendous view (in the Lakes...)

by skywalkerbeth

Hi all

still poking around about where to stay, what to see, what to do. I don't know where we are staying in the Lakes... what we are doing.. but perhaps if I find a hotel which just has a heartbreaking view in one of the towns it wil l tip the balance.

So let's hear it! Which of your hotels just had the best views? I'd love the double whammy - snow capped Alps and lakes at the same time.

On Lake Como, it can be hard to find a hotel without great views. Price range?

And maybe you can choose the lake. Lake GArda has stunning landscapes, too, but it's a little eastward....
Dependend on how you travel, this may be important or not..

excellent sites - and as well as checking out the hotels on VT pages. Popular in Bellagio at this price level is the Florence. In a small village on the west coast, there is a Best Western for which the pictures are beautiful. It may be out of your price range but friends stayed at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo and loved it. There is also a large hotel on the water in Como. There are so many more and you will get more suggestions here.

I recommend a lovely, family-run, lakeside hotel in Baveno on Lake Maggiore. It's called Albergo Rigoli ( and I've stayed there many times. It's a short two/three minute walk to the centre of the village and the landing stage for the ferries. It is located directly on the lakeshore, is very quiet, and has good views and a good restaurant (although not very atmospheric). Try to get a double or twin room with balcony overlooking the lake - it's magical.

Baveno is a lovely village too, you can easily get around to the other villages/towns on the lake. Stresa is the main town on that part of the lake and is full of restaurants, shops and lots of big, expensive hotels.

You can take the cable car up the moutain from Stresa Lido or you could pop into Milan on the train (takes about an hour). There is also a beautiful train ride into the Italian/Swiss Alps and then a ferry back to Baveno. There's a tourist office in the village, which can organise other trips too.
