More about Hotel Villa Cipressi

Villa Cipressi

by tpal

The village of Varenna is worth visiting merely for the joy of enjoying the town and the vistas it offers. If, however, you need more specific attractions you will find several options. This photo offers one of those views that is so ideal that it could easily be confused with the work of a Hollywood matte artist. It is definitely worth a click to enlarge.
The picture is taken from Villa Cipressi. The villa itself has now been converted into a hotel and as such is not open to tour unless you are a guest. The gardens, however, are open and wonderful. Not quite as extensive as its sister 80 meters down the road, the Villa Monastero, but still charming in a more controllable manner. Large enough to become engulf but not so large as to be overwhelming.

Villa Monastero

by tpal

There is no shortage of magnificent villas along the shore of Lake Como and there is also probably ample opportunity to argue which is the "most magnificent". I'd have to say though, that in regard to structure and setting this one ain't bad! The Villa Monastero was built starting in the 19th century. Located in Varenna just down the road from the Villa Cipressi, this is definitely the star if only based on size. Whereas the gardens of Villa Cipressi are beautiful and charming, the gardens of Villa Monastero are spectacular and somewhat daunting.
Today the villa is owned by the National Counsel for Research (how's that for sounding important and undefining all at once) and provides conference space. The gardens are open to the public and extensive. If you want to see it all you will need to set aside at least half a day. Even then it will likely be difficult to absorb all the formally developed terraced gardens, sculptures and the many peaceful seating areas.

Great Value, Incredible View!!

We stayed here last weekend (5/20/2006) and we loved it. The view from the terrace is simply astounding. I feel like the people with negative reviews of this place stayed somewhere completely different.

Service: The staff was incredibly helpful, great with restaurants, directions, rooms, everything.

Rooms: Fine, this is a 3 star so don't go expecting the Ritz, the bathrooms are big and clean by European standards. The rooms themselves are adequate. I think the extra for a Lakeview room is definitely worth it. The street side rooms will get noisy if you plan on sleeping in, but this is true of all the hotels on Varennas main drag.

Food: The restaurant is nice but not cheap. Drinks on the garden terrace are worth their weight in gold and not too pricey. Breakfast is included and it is quite good by European standards.

View: This hotel has its own expansive botanical garden on one of the most amazing lakes in the world all for about $100 Euros a night.

Room with a View

I e-mailed the hotel directly to make reservations for our two night stay in June, 2005. I specifically asked for a lake view. Upon arrival, we were given a room with a side view of the lake. The hotel manager would not change our room location though we still were charged the price of a lake view. So be cautious in making reservations. Aside from the room difficulties, the hotel location and the grounds surrounding the hotel were charming. The breakfast offered a good variety and the brewed coffee was excellent.

"Lake Como"

This is actually not close to Bologna and I don't know why my wife put them here...she is ..always in the clouds since she married me and probably she had mistaken the province...

The gardens of Villa Monastero

Villa Cipressi. my favourite corner.

Hotel Olivedo....actually recomended by Lianna, a member of Vt. She suggested me to go to Varenna.

Varenna - Diamond of the Lake

"Idyllic Lake Como"

It was our third day on Lake Como but it was our first ferry boat ride. Varenna is on the opposite side of the lake from where we were staying in Ossuccio. Taking the ferry was the simplest and most direct way to get there. More importantly, it was definitely the "best way" for us to arrive there for a first view. The ride from Lenno made several stops along the way including Villa Carlotta and Bellagio. Every stop was beautifully unique but Varenna...this was special.
Here the colorful homes were built right to water's edge. There was a steep rock face where nothing could be built and seemed to divide the village. Cleverly a promenade had been built cantilevered over the water. The walkway leads past shops and a few cafes with "you-never-have-to-leave-your-chair" photo opps. Boats were most often merely pulled up on shore and tied off.
Varenna is home to two very elaborate villas and gardens - Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero. Both are definitely worth a visit. But in my mind, the real allure was exploring the walks and back lanes of the tiny town. I read somewhere that, "If Bellagio is the pearl of Lake Como then Varenna is the diamond". This seemed surely true.

Varenna, Lake Como's finest

"The town itself"

The town of Varenna is so picturesque, sitting on a point jutting out into Lake Como. The buildings and houses are beautifully colored in shades of red, yellow, coral, and salmon. It has a nice little harbor with good ferry service to the other mid lake towns, and a cute little old town center around a Piazza San Giorgio connected to the harbor by the Passerella (a lakeside promenade). There are no streets in the old town, just what they call contrade, or characteristic stepped lanes. The population is only about 800, the town is small and easily walked, though there are some steep alleys.

"Arrival in Varenna"

Getting to Varenna from Milan was easy. There are frequent trains, the trip taking only an hour. Heading towards Varenna, the scenic side of the train will be the left. Be ready to get off quickly at the station, the train doesn't stop for long. There is one main street running down towards town from the train station. At the first cross street (where the Hotel Baretta is on your right), if you turn left and follow the street up the hill you will reach the center of town. If you continue straight toward the lake, you will be at the harbor. From there you can follow along the lake path and find your way to the town center via several of the very narrow streets up hills.

"Around Varenna"

You can hike up to Castello di Vezio, high on the hill above the town, with good views, about 20 minutes one way. There are two Villas and gardens, Villa Cipressi and Villa Monastero, both an easy walk just beyond the main town square. Very pretty lakeside settings.

Accomodations in Varenna

by iloveaustria

I am looking for a place for 3 couples to stay for 3 nights, Sept 26 - 28, 2010. Most hotels that I have already contacted are already booked.
Grazie, Carol

www.venere.com has no available rooms listed but www.booking.com does have a few, although they are slightly outside Varenna itself.

Re: Accomodations in Varenna

by iloveaustria

thanks. Why does venere not have anything listed? Is the date too far out?

Re: Accomodations in Varenna

by leics

Gosh...never looked at the year! Thought you were looking for tomorrow!

But, now I've checked venere for 2010, it is almost certainly because your dates are way, way ahead. I would not be thinking of booking yet, personally. Try again around the end of October....or contact the hotels you fancy directly by email or phone.

Look at www.venere.com first, perhaps using dates in April next year to see what hotels exist, reviews etc.

Re: Accomodations in Varenna

by leics

www.booking.com only allows searches up to August 2010.

Don't worry....wait a month or so and I'm sure you will find availability on both sites.

Re: Accomodations in Varenna

by cgf

usually you cannot book more then 11 months in advance.
CRS/GDS will not permit it. the only way for doing so it is booking directly.

Re: Accomodations in Varenna

Thank you so much for the informaion. I have contacted Villa Cipressi and they are already booked and so is Albergo Milano. Do you recommend a place?
Grazie

Re: Accomodations in Varenna

Look wwww.tripadvisor.com booking.com and venere.com for reviews

Re: Accomodations in Varenna

by leics

Truly, I would be dubious about their claims to be already fully-booked.

It is far more likely they either a) thought you meant this year or b) do not want to admit they cannot book so far in advance (computer programs etc).

I can't personally recommend anywhere, sorry....have not stayed in that part of Italy.

Leave it a month or so and I'm certain you will find plenty of availability for September 2010 (quite possibly even in the hotels you have already contacted).
