Unaffected luxury

Of all the places we stayed on my two-week trip to Italy, this was my probably favorite--a fabulous breakfast, stunning views right from our rooms and from the breakfast patio over Lake Como. The hotel is right on the lake, in fact, so you can hear the lapping of the small waves underneath your small porch at night. It's an idyllic setting, with innkeepers who are friendly (but don't speak fully fluent English) and will even make restaurant reservations for you. While this is considered a high-end inn, it doesn't have any affectations or stuffiness about it.

Unique Quality: We had two rooms--both could hold up to three people, and the rooms are large by Italian standards, with nice walk-in showers, small porches (enough room for two chairs) overlooking Lago di Como, and nice bedlinens.

Make sure you try the croissants and tarts at breakfast--they're great!
