Lago Maggiore with Isola Bella and Isola Madre
The Bell-tower hidden by the block of buildings
We're staying at Baveno and would like to drive to Lake Lugano avoiding Switzerland [simple because we don't want to pay the annual road tax, which is expensive]. Are there any boats from the Italian side of Lake Lugano which we could take a trip on - website is a bit inconclusive.
Any ideas on routes etc greatly appreciated
I know nothing excpet what I see on the Internet...but I see that you can drive to Porto Ceresio on the southern end of the lake without crossing into Switzerland, then take a ferry (or cruise or both) up to Lugano and maybe elsewhere...see www.viamichlin.com for the trip to Porto Ceresio, and http://www.lakelugano.ch/immanews/Orario2008.pdf for the timetables of one ferry company anyway...
The "road tax" you only need to pay if you use motorways. So no problem driving through Switzerland, as long as you stay on ordinary roads.
You can easily reach Lugano without use the motorway from Baveno. If you want you can take the ferry from Intra to Laveno and from there Lugano is very easy to reach.
