Ferry from Ancona to Split

by G_J_K

I am traveling from Ancona to Split then onto Hvar in late June. How far in advance do i need to book the overnight ferry from Ancona to Split and then the ferry from Split to Hvar? And which is the best company to use.

Jadrolinija runs a ferry from Ancona to Hvar via Split on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There is a ferry from Ancona to Split on Sunday (dep Ancona 1130 arr Split 1915) -if you take that one you would need to transfer to the local Split-Stari Grad (Hvar) line. You can book the Ancona-Stari Grad ferry ticket in advance, the Split - Hvar ferry ticket can only be bought on the day - the last ferry goes at about 2230. I would suggest you book your ticket from Ancona as soon as you are sure of your dates.

Note the following statement from the Jadrolinija website -

EMBARKATION
Embarkation starts 2 - 3 hours prior departure of the ferry from the starting port or immediately upon arrival and disembarkation of passengers and vehicles in others. International line ticket holders should report to the port agent at least 2 hours prior to departure, otherwise Shipowner reserves the right to dispose of the booked accommodation without refund to the passenger.

Thanks so much, that is very helpful. We will be traveling on Wednesday June 24th so we can get the Ferry from Ancona to Hvar via Split then? Do you have the website where i can book this? Because i could only find Ancona to Split. Do you know how far in advance these ferries book out?

Thanks again.

Sorry, one last question. There doesn't seem to be a ferry from Ancona to Hvar via Split on Wednesday, June 24th - do the direct ferries not start until July maybe? It looks like i am able to book from Ancona to Split though - but then not from Split to Hvar.

Any further insight would be so appreciated.

Many thanks

The website and timetables certainly give sailings for Wednesdays in June from Ancona to Stari Grad, and say thet immigration formalities for passengers to Satri Grad wil be completed in Split, so why there is a problem with booking is something of a mystery.
I can only suggest you email Jadrolinija directly with your questions.

The building in the middle of the photo is for custom offices and the offices of the shipping companies for checking in. It stands in the middle of the pier and you have to drive between the building and quay to reach the line for your ferry.

Port

by Airpunk

Ancona’s port has a long tradition. It was founded by the romans in the second century BC and became a gate to other adriatic cities. The port has kep this role until today so that still a number of freighters and passenger ferries are seen in the port of Ancona. Their main destinations remain Croatia, Albania and Greece. While I was in the old town, I watched a ferry (the one to the right of the Jadrolinija ship) backing into its parking space. It looked like ballet, just with a very heavy ballerina.

The Port of Ancona

by xristos83

Yes, Ancona probably would be much prettier if some of the eyesores on the port were torn down... but otherwise the city wouldn't prosper as much as it does now. Despite some of the ugly industrial cranes and storage tanks (I GUESS that's what some of them are), enjoy the views of the city from the street along the harbor. One of my favorite memories was sitting with friends on a platform looking toward the duomo. Our feet would be dangling over the edge above the water, a huge ferry from Croatia would be docked next to us, and we would dream of getting on the boats heading out to Athens, Patras, Crete, Dubrovnik, and Istanbul. Alas...most people only come to Ancona to do just that, but we were "locals".

Museo Archeologico Nazionale delle Marche

by Willettsworld

The museum began in 1860 as the regional Archaeological Cabinet of the Commission of Monuments. It then became the National Archaeological Museum in 1906. The building used to belong to the Ferretti family in the 16th century. The museum displays a large collection of Greek, Gallic and Roman art and is worth a visit.

ancona 1994

"casino royale"

with few experiences of travelling ,ancona as a trip was presented to me as a two week break from london
we travelled into ancona by train from a main airport sucking in the shore line and being pointed out Rimini as we traveled south along the adriatic sea
we arrived into ancona via the main central ancona train station and was picked up with no fuss or traffic by our host
it was my first time in italy ,and it looked exactly how one wood imagine it
quazzi james bond with the monte carlo buildings and shop fronts martini neon lights it was all real quite magical
it also felt very reasuring i never felt any sense of danger it was like being in bornmouth very tranquil and so charming
after seeing other citys on the train with rich terocotta ancona was a bit more classial and darker stoned

"marine boy"

it was getting dark and we ate and got up for our 1st day
i couldnt wait to get to the beach
i think i swam 1 and a half miles every day (bar two days)

there was the main beach (with a lift )on a mian prominade
it was the local beach front it was very peaceful uncrowed
the weather was unbelivable in august it took 30 mins to dry ones
shirt in the sun from saoking wet
swimming in the med for us in england is a bit like a lake when you compare it to the cold water of the north sea english channel

i dont think i will ever forgot swimimg in the shallows up to out croped rocks of ancona the water so clear u could see the craggy rocks on the sea bed the greeny blue sea the plants in the sea fish swimimg

"club tropicana"

it wasnt all just swimimg
we hit a few clubs and night spots arround the town at night
but theres one thing you cant explain to local ancona people
if you like me come from say london
and that is the night sky in ancona
it was abosulty astonuding
the clartiy of the stars at night ,star dust ,clouds of stars
and the baots sailing off to greece, on the night sky twinkling over the
horizon, mooonlight too
i kissed her then .............a kiss i will never forget
the night life was modern inteligent and fashionble
there was no inpulsive trend towards degeratation in 1994
drum and bass wasnt quite invented in europe then
but i guess its a jazzy snazzy place now
it also had this kind of american zing in the metal of the town
it had the late 50s american grafitti feel to it
in the youth culture as the commuted about on vespas
and micro fiat cars
i felt like gene kely in an american in paris
because ancona looks like a holylwod set from the movie ..... those quitesentail monte carlo, james bond, real martni neon lights ......... real and quite unshacken not stirred {not one word on football} ancona fc LOL.
