Connection from Ancona ferry to Rome by train

by ahernwh

We are scheduled to arrive in Ancona from Zadar by ferry at 6 p.m. in the evening and to catch a 7 p.m. train to Rome. Is this too tight a connection?

Railway station is a few minuts of bus or taxi away from the port.I guess it all depends on how long it will take to you to get out of the ferry and head to the station.

The 19:08 from Ancona is the last train to Rome, so you will have to make sure you get it.

www.ferroviedellostato.it will give you train times and fares (English button at the top).

If you are concerned (disembarking a ferry is not always speedy and there may be delays) then you could stay overnight in Ancona and leave early the next morning. You don't need to book your train ticket in advance, so you could just decide when you arrive.

Travel Tips for Ancona

Sailing at last !

by JLBG

Once the ferry sails out of the harbor, you can discover large warehouses, north-east to the city (first photo). The second and the third photo show the landscape that shows when the ferry tacks south-east. The promontory of Monte Conero is rocky and protects well the bay from southerly winds. The citadel that protected the city spreads on several level from the sea level to the summit of Monte Astagno.

Piazza Plebiscito

by Willettsworld

This square, which dates from the 14th century, is dominated by the church of San Domenico (1738) which stands at it's eastern end. In front of the church is the statue of Pope Clemente XII who granted Ancona to be a free port.

Portella di Santa Maria

by Airpunk

In front of Santa Maria della Piazza, you will find this city gate from the 14th century, together with a part from the old city wall. The gate was refurbished in the 20th century and is still used. However, it has its own scheduled times when it is open or closed. During the time when it is closed, the space in front of it is used as a parking lot.

Buildings in the old town

by Airpunk

Unfortunately, I wasn’t well prepared for Ancona. That gives me the effect of surprise sometimes, but leaves me sometimes without any background facts while standing in front of something interesting. In some cases, I am not even able to find ifnromations about it when I am back home. This was the case in Ancona, where I saw a coupls of beautiful buildings, just without known what they are. I someone can provied me with details about these, I will be grateful – THANKS!

We arrived in Rome on 30 April and I decided to head east immediately as we were meeting up in Riccione with my parents a few days later. It was a long journey and it enabled me to practise my 'italian'. We arrived in Ancona about 11pm and I found a hotel.
It rained every day so the children and I would take a bus to its destination, get off and look around, then take another bus until we criss-crossed the town. I particularly remember standing on a windy headland overlooking the sea and reading a monument to the WWII.
Another find was a tiny little church made out of marble which was carved with many forms and I especially noticed an elephant. This church dated to about 12 or 13 century.
The best memory was the warm pizzeria near the hotel where we had our supper. It was the first time for us to see all the balletic movements involved in making the pizza dough.
