Santa Maria a piè di Chienti
Another beautiful Romanesque church in the Chienti valley, Santa Maria a piè di Chienti was founded by Charlemagne, according to legend. Actually the present church is a bit younger, from 1125. The building is made entirely of brick and is quite bare both from the outside and from the inside.
The interior has a special charm of its own though, with its alabaster windows. It's divided in an upper and lower church, although the former doesn't start until halfway along. The apse of the upper church is decorated with frescoes from 1447. You'll need to throw a coin in a machine to illuminate them.
Directions: at Montecosaro Scalo, about 20 km from Macerata. Not far from the SS 485 in the direction of Civitanova Marche. The church is signposted.
