Journey time is around 5 hours (depending on departure time) with one change involved. One-way fare from 14.90 euro (dependent on departure).
Ticket machines at Rome Termini station are easy to use and have English language options. No need to book in advance online (regional trains do not have reservable seats anyway) but if you want you can easily buy your ticket a day or so in advance from Termini....or just before you travel.
Make sure you validate (date-stamp) your ticket before boarding by using the yellow machines on the platform. There are on-the-spot fines for non-validation, and guards do check.

thank you for the information - very helpful! we had come across this website in our search but it looked like the cheapest ticket was about 50 euros... 14.50 sounds a lot better!

It is always, always best to use the official railway website for any European country.
Ticketing agencies, such as Raileurope, simply do not list all departures (and charge commission).
You cannot reserve seats on regional trains (which cannot get 'full-up' anyway) so I think Raileurope only lists the expensive intercity departures. If you are happy to take a little longer on your journey then you can find very reasonable fares indeed.
Just buy your ticket when you are in Rome. No problem at all (although you may find cash easir to use at ticket machines than your card). :-)

The quicker and easiest way to get to San Benedettto del Tronto from Roma by public transport service is to take a direct coach.
There are two companies which have several daily connections:

The first company has some connections leaving from Fiumicino Rome Airport.
Journey time: 3 - 3 1/2 hours
One way price is around 15 euros, discount on return ticket
