Medieval play time...
From the start, the bout was action filled.
Solid strikes...
Defensive moves...ouch!!
Oh, oh!!
Block...
push...
SNAP......... !!!
This isn't role playing. The swordsman was injured during the bout, and we were unaware of the severity of the injury before the festival ended.
It wasn't the sword that directly caused the injury, but the great stress placed on the combatants extremeties as the weight of the strike forces their body into awkward positions. The weight of the weapon is tremendous, and even a swing without a strike can cause ligaments to pop.
Lorenzo, our friends son, broke his leg during a demonstration a year ago. Once again, through the swing of the heavy weapon, combined with the force of the strikes, the leg was forced into an unnatural position, snapping the bone.
All of the displays are carefully choreographed, but all it takes is a slight hesitation, or a slippery sword handle to cause a mishap. It really isn't for the foolhardy.
