Montefalco - The Balcony of Umbria
"Home of the Sagrantino wine and sainthood"
We stopped by Montefalco as we made our way from Assisi back to our home base of Todi in Umbria. Montefalco was deserted which proved to us that not all of Italy is bombarded with hordes of tourists in July.
Montefalco is famous for its red wine, known as Sagrantino. Indeed, Montefalco is situated in the middle of a region with numerous vineyards. We decided to make a stop here for that reason and pick up a couple of bottles of Sagrantino. Of course, this produced groans from our children, who think visiting the Napa wine region near our home in California is the most boring thing known to mankind. It didn't matter to them that the Montefalco region is on the opposite side of the world and its ideal climate produced an outstanding red wine. To them, if you've seen one wine region, you've seen them all.
Montefalco is a small, charming hilltop town. In addition to being the home of perhaps the best red wines in Umbria, it has another claim to fame -- Montefalco is the birth place of 8 saints. One might conclude there is a decided connection between wine and saints.
