The mystery of the "Locusta"
by Manara
In 1896, during the night between January 8 and 9, just past midnight a sudden and very strong storm sank the patrol-boat “Locusta” near Cannobio, off the Cavalla point.
Twelve men, eight seamen and four policemen who were doing their usual patrol service at the border between Italy and Switzerland, lost their lives. The memorial you see in my picture commemorates them.
There is a mystery about this tragedy, because no relic was ever found, nor any of the bodies, as if the boat had vanished with its crew. New searches were done after 1975, using modern technology, the last attempt was done in 2006, but without any success.
Cannobio
by Manara
s4This little town on the western bank of the Maggiore Lake is considerably different from its sisters of the southern bank. Everything is more quiet here, although not sleepy, and also more picturesque.
I am referring to the town itself, its streets and houses. Because if one considers the landscapes of the lake, every place by the lake Maggiore is spectacular.
At the moment I am posting very little, but more tips will follow, I promise.

"Warm sun, cool breeze"
Cannobio is a perfect spot for a one day trip i.e. from Locarno in Switzerland.
Situated at the Lago di Maggiore (lake Superior) you can easily reach Cannobio either by ferry, own car or the convenient public bus connection from Locarno/Ascona.
Don't get confused for Cannobio is in Italy and Canobbio in Switzerland close to Lugano!
