Cuneo? Anyone?

Has anyone been to Cuneo? I'm having trouble finding any information on this city. I will be traveling from Torino to Nice and figured I would stop in for a quick cafe or time it for lunch for the ride down. Is it worth the stop over or should I drive on past?

Hi not been there but apparently it had a Cathedral, 12th C. Church, medieval streets and a fortress, and a castle.

It's worth a visit; very interesting architecture in the neighbourhood.
Don't miss the "baci di Cuneo": sugar, chocolate and alchol... :-)

Titti, I noticed you reside in Bergamo, that is where I will be staying for a week before I head to Torino! I've been once before and love the place. We will be staying with relatives and will be making side trips to Lago de Garda and Milan.

One additional question for you: Do you know any local wineries that do tastings and tours? I have found one(www.latordela.it/eng/Default.htm) but thats it.

I've never been to Cuneo, but you could stop in Tende on the French side of the border. An interesting archaeology museum, a few nice cafes etc. Good scenery too, though I guess that goes for most places in Piemonte / Alpes Maritimes

Cathédrale Santa Maria del Bosco

Ancien priorat de l'abbaye bénédictine de Borgo San Dalmazzo, cet édifice religieux fut reconstruit entre 1657 et 1660 selon le projet de Boetto, après que le précédent s'était écroulé en 1656. Insérée entre d'autres édifices, la cathédrale se distingue par son imposante façade néoclassique réalisée au XIXe siècle, avec de hautes colonnes corinthiennes qui soutiennent le grand fronteau. A la même période remontent aussi la coupole, peinte à fresque par Giuseppe Toselli de Peveragno, et la décoration intérieure de Rodolfo Morgari. A ne pas manquer aussi le retable du maître-autel de A. Pozzo.

L'origine de cet édifice doit être recherchée en l'aide que les Milanais de la Ligue Lombarde donnèrent à la ville de Cuneo alors qu'elle fut détruite par le Marquis de Saluzzo. Cela se passa en l'an 1230, alors que les deux villes s'échangèrent, comme signe d'amitié, leurs saints patrons. Suite à plusieurs vicissitudes, on édifia entre 1703 et 1743, une nouvelle église consacrée au Saint selon le projet de Francesco Gallo ; l'église fut cependant achevée seulement au cours du XIXe siècle. Elle se caractérise pour sa façade polychrome tandis que l'intérieur est composé d'une complexe scénographie architectonique décorée par Milocco et Bianco de Turin.
