Spread over a hill, on a magnificent panoramic position, the oldest part of Neive is certainly of Roman origin. It is confirmed by a number of archaeological finds, some of them re-used in the medieval constructions, and the two necropolises discovered in the past on the north and south of the village. In the late Middle Ages, Neive was contested for a long time between Alba and Asti. A fortified structure was most probably built already at the end of the IX century, in the area known today as Pian Castello. It had a defence role against Saracen raids. Another fortress, of the Cotti family, dates back from the beginning of XIII century
