Travel Tips for Sestriere

Italian Alps- Bella

by johnfrompalatineil

"not easy but worth the trip"

You are in for a shock if you think, like I did, that trains travel regularly from Torino to Oulx, gateway to Sestriere. The last train is relatively early, leaving Torino before 5PM, at least in June? The train ride is beautiful, peaceful and you also get to see the beautiful souls of the Italian people. Boy are they passionate!

Don't make the same mistake we did thinking that it is easy to get from the French Alps to the Italian Alps and vice versa, but we did it! Live and learn...

I thought a number of times that we should have rented a car but you know what, that would have messed with the entire experience.

"Summer travel to Sestriere"

is not easy. Once you arrive in Oulx, there is a very inexpensive bus that makes its way to Sestriere, about 4 times daily. But the times are not very convenient, ie first bus from Sestriere to Oulx is late morning, hard to get anywhere at a decent time once in Oulx.

Once in Sestriere with baggage in hand, there aren't too many taxis. In fact you have to go to an open restaurant and have them call you one. Cost me almost 20 Euro to ride less than a mile away. I know, I know, Sestriere is a ski resort. It still is gorgeous in the Summer!

"Simple yet divine life"

Simply beautiful. No beautiful buildings, architecture. All GOD's creation! Fresh mountain water, air, beautiful peaks, rivers.

Nuns walking school children who chatter happily along. Young boys playing Bocce on the side of the road on a Summer afternoon.

Even the food. Went to the local grocer and had the best bottle of wine, cheese and bread that I remember. Why can't our everyday lives be this so uncomplicated?
