Stresa or Baveno

by mazjohn

We plan a couple of weeks on Lake Maggiore and wonder whether Stresa or Baveno is the better place to stay. We tend to prefer smaller resorts, such as Baveno, but like to do our own thing rather than go on organised excursions. So from the ease of getting around on local trains, buses, boats, etc. which would be the better base for us to stay in. I'd appreciate as much info as possible please. Thanks to everyone who bothers to reply!

I was in Stresa on a bus tour back in the 1990's. Very nice little town, a walking town. It's on a train route (assume buses too it's on the main route to Lugano, Switzerland, has regular boat service to Borromean Islands and a cable car that goes to the summit of Monte Mottarone, with the Giardino Botanico Alpinia en route.

Don't know Baveno.

Both towns are small, but with big hotels and convention centres, so the number of visitors should be about the same. However Stresa is better placed with regard to transports. Moreover, from Stresa you can also take a cable-car up to the mount Mottarone.

Stresa every time - all the boats seem to start from here; there's a good train service; it is not a large town in any sense, if a bit full of tourists! Baveno is charming, built on the hillside so very steep streets.

Travel Tips for Stresa

Stresa - beach resorts

by croisbeauty

Well, I am not the one who might be interesting in lake bathing because, as far as I am concerning, the lake-water is too cold even in the summer time. Besides, since I am coming from the sea-side resort, I have certain predjudice regarding bathing in non-salt water.
The beach resort around Stresa looks pretty much cool, and many people seems like enjoying it very much.

Umbrellas and sun cream!

by ChrsStrl

Whatever you find comfortable. Comfortable walking shoes, and something for all weathers. Take some sun cream, but other than that just whatever you woulod normally carry. Milan is not far away! Good camera with lens for close study of flowers. Swimming costumes, mountain gear, ordinary comfortable clothes

STRESA

Stresa is a charming town on the southern shore of the lake. It has been a favourite destination with the British, even Queen Victoria stayed on the shores of Lake Maggiore. And many other famous people too.

Explore the centre of town

by Manara

The lake front with its promenade and hotels is certainly the most prominent part of Stresa, but there is also an old centre of town that is difinitely worth exploring, with narrow streets and picturesque little houses. Here you will find also shops, little restaurants and cafes.

Isola dei Pescatori

by croisbeauty

The main "street" of the island is very pitoresque, short and narrow but full up with shops, small cafes and beautiful stone houses. Must be very interesting to live here, where everything looks so friendly and easy going.
Some terraces are decorated with fishing nets or equipment telling us who is living in.
