august weather for turin and stresa

by genebeans

We will be there next month and wonder what type of weather we can expect. Is it too hot and how about rainstorms?Thank you-Gene

Expect it to be hot... right now it's too hot, actually (temperatures are expected to rise to 40C - so it's not subjective). If it rained a bit we would not mind... anyway in august it's not very likely to have rainstorms, in the worst case it will likely be an occasional shower.

I see that you have travelled to Italy before... so you probably know that italians take their holidays in August... you might find the city half deserted, and many restaurants will be closed. Attractions should stay open, I think. Make reservations for Stresa, as it may be fully booked.

Thank you for responses.Guess it will be a bit hot but we come from Florida so we are used to humidity etc. Rain would be a bigger issue with us as we like to walk around but the young lady who lives in Torino advised that rain is unlikely-Thanks

Travel Tips for Torino

Luci d'artista - 2

by Mikebond

Here are more light art works. I particularly liked the firework-like work, which should have been in Piazza Castello. The last picture show a basin with hot, red-coloured water.
If you go to Torino, check if Luci d'artista is on and don't miss it!

Torino - Packing List

by ant1606

Torino lies exactly on the 45th parallel in a temperate zone and it has 4 seasons. Spring and Fall can be rainy, summer is hot and humid and most winters are cold and white.
Adjust accordingly.

World Class Wine

by ant1606

Piedmont is home to some of the best wines in the world. In terms of territory and wine varieties, the area lying southeast of the city is probably the best option for a visitor who wants to drive within easy reach.
60 Km (40 mi) from Torino lie the areas of Langhe and Roero, respectively south and north of the city of Alba, and the province of Asti.
Not only this land is the production area of prestigious wines, but its kind and diehard people, cuisine and landscapes definitely deserve a well-worth visit. Top produces, other than wine, are cheese, truffle, mushroom and hazelnut.
We Piedmontese sometimes refer to this land as the "University of Taste", and we're not wrong as this is home to the finest typical local dishes. A myriad of villages and small towns where stayfarms offer relaxed accommodation and excellent food with dining views over mountains and hills covered by extensive vineyards.

Even a simple day drive or ride through the area is an eye-filling experience. Nevertheless it's a prime destination for Turinese motorcyclists - including myself! Various possibilities for free tasting of wine, grappa and other products. Best period is fall season.
WARNING: don't drink and drive!

Speed traps & traffic-light traps

by ant1606

Speed is not the only stereotype about Italy but certainly one of them although the "good ole days" seem to be over.
Law enforcement officers use moving speed traps named "Autovelox" and laser-pointing devices. These are movable instruments operated from random static locations. So far, radar systems mounted aboard moving vehicles - such as those used by the police in Northamerica - are not adopted. In addition to the above, many cities including Torino have recently installed fixed speed traps in various points. See link herebelow for clearer map.
Another favorite, too frequent misdemeanor of Italians is the skipping of a traffic red light. Be alert and never trust your right of way under a green light or any ungoverned intersection. As a response to uncivil behavior, Torino has installed some camera systems - named "T-Red" - which are mounted to traffic lights and active only when the color is yellow or red. Some of these systems also include sensors under the pavement.

E' necessario prenotare e comunque visto i ridotti numeri di posti a sedere c'è sempre da aspettare, ma ne vale la pena: Tutte le pizze.
