Travel in the Foggia Province
by JoanieH
I will be arriving to Foggia by train from Naples this summer (on or about June 12th). I need to get to Biccari. I see buses from Foggia train station to Lucera, but not to other outlying towns, although "Lonely Planet" indicates that there are buses. Can anyone give me a schedule, website or bus company name that would go to the interior towns. I plan on visits to Castelluccio Valmaggiore, nearby Faeto and Troia besides Biccari. I do NOT want to rent a car.

You can visit the internet site "Ferrovie del Gargano" http://www.ferroviedelgargano.com/
In the home page you must:
1) click on the box labelled "AUTOLINEE LOCALI".
2) then click on "DIRETTRICE 5"
3) insert in the field with label "CERCA UNA LOCALITÀ" the name of the town (i.e. Biccari)
4) click on the button "Cerca"
5) select "Direttrice 5 - Biccari - Foggia"
6) you will see the timetable requested.
You can repeat the searh frpm step 3) for others towns too.
Bye

Travel Tips for Foggia
Lucera e Monti dauni
by avivo
Lucera is an ancient city founded in Daunia, the centre of Dauni territory (in present day Apulia). Archeological excavations show the presence of a bronze age village inside the city boundaries. Lucera was probably named after either Lucius, a mythical Dauno king, or a temple dedicated to the goddess Lux Cereris. A third possibility is that the city was founded and named by the Etruscans, in which case the name probably means Holy Wood
In 321 BC the Roman army was deceived into thinking Lucera was under siege by the Samnites. Hurrying to relieve their allies the army walked into an ambush and were defeated at the famous Battle of the Caudine Forks. The Samnites occupied Lucera but were thrown out after a revolt. The city sought Roman protection and in 320 BC was granted the status of Colonia Togata, which meant it was ruled by the Roman Senate. 2500 Romans moved to Lucera in order to strengthen the ties between the two cities. From then on Lucera was known as a steadfast supporter of Rome. The best menory is the City Castel and the hotel "PALACE LUCERA" with a beautiful spa.

Gulf of Mattinata

The beautiful Gulf of Mattinata
Mattinata, with its roofs of a dazzling whiteness in the green of olive and almond trees, whose name - Bacchelli recalls - is linked to the rising hour of the day. Here the charm of the landscape cannot be expressed indeed by words.
