Summer Holiday 2006
"Trulli scrumptious"
The unique architectural feature of the region is the trulli or conical roofed dwellings which are dotted across the countryside. They were originally built about 800 years ago andf it is not really clear why (Comments from VTers with better information much appreciated). The guide books (few and far between in English for Puglia at the moment) offer two explanations:
1) The design keeps the interior cool in summer and warm in winter
2) They were designed and built like dry stones walls with no cement and could, therefore, be speedily dismantled to evade inspectors of taxes on permanent dwellings.
We were lucky enough to stay in a villa with four trulli and it was fab
