Convenient and friendly two-star

Il Gabbiano is a pleasant two-star hotel located pretty much slap-bang in the middle of Otranto, convenient for the town's beaches, the evening passeggiata, bars and restaurants. When we visited in July it was one of the only affordable hotels in the town itself: Otranto is a popular seaside getaway and prices rocket in the summer. We were prepared for the hotel to be a dive but it was actually good value for money.

The hotel is clean and the owners friendly. We were given plenty of advice on how to get to our next destination and there are various maps and brochures on the area downstairs. Rooms have private bathrooms and are fairly spacious. Our room had a balcony overlooking the front of the hotel.

The only real downside was the lack of air conditioning. It was very difficult to sleep with the heat, and, although there was a fan which was enough in the daytime, I don't think I could have stayed more than a night.

  • Opinion of Price: less expensive than average

Q: transportation to Otranto? "What is the best, economical way to get to Otranto from Brindisi, Italy airport? There are 2 of us and we heard taxis may charge..."

A: "You can rent a car (it's less expensive than a taxi) but it's less expensive go go by train from Brindisi to Lecce and then by bus from Lecce to Otranto. Bye"
