Are you ready to be enchanted?
"Love at first sight!"
Otranto is enchanting! There is not much else to say about the place without it seeming banal and superfluous.
My first visit was in winter, almost exactly four years ago. The town was deserted apart from a few local residents, among the small number who remain in the town all year round. The day was sunny and warm. It seemed as though Otranto existed just for me.
My second visit was longer and I had time to explore the countryside and coast to the north and south. It is the essence of the Salentine Peninsular. I can still smell the thyme, growing in abundance on the rocky coast, feel the breeze and hear the sounds of the sea lapping below!
Otranto offers a host of interesting things to see and do: the cathedral, the chapel of Saint Peter, the castle, city walls and gates, the port, the Sanctuary commemorating the Martyrs of Otranto, etc, etc...
Don't neglect the countryside and coastline around Otranto though, which offer some of the best walking and most special places in the whole region. The coast road between Otranto and Santa Cesarea Terme is one of the most beautiful coastal drives that I've ever been on... certainly rivals the Amalfi Coast and the Cote d'Azur which I have had the pleasure of visiting recently. If you're not convinced, come and judge for yourself!
