Transportation to San Giovanni from Rome

by ponchiewyatt

Hello,

Thank you for the wonderful information. Do you happen to have the price information on bus and train tickets to San Giovanni from Rome and back? I have been searching for days and am finding very little information. Also was it necessary to buy the tickets in advance and where do you get them?

Thank you.

Where exactly do you mean? San Giovanni in Laterano? That's just an easy bus ride within Rome....I can find details if you want.

Or do you mean somewhere else? There are other San Giovanni, but most seem to have something else in their name e.g. San Giovanni Rotondo, d'Asso and so on. Maybe that's why you are having trouble finding transport details?

Hello,

(J, since this was posted in the San Giovanni Rotondo forum, I think that's where the poster wants to go.)

It looks like Foggia is the closest train station to San Giovanni Rotondo, so you’ll want to take a train from Rome to Foggia. There are several trains a day, but if you’re planning a day trip (that will be a loooong day), the best solution appears to be a Eurostar at 7:38 in the morning. Takes 3.5 hours to get to Foggia.

The one-way fare: 28.9 euros with the Amica fare (requires purchase at least by the day before) vs 36.10 euros standard fare in second class (which is just fine).

In general, you don’t need to buy train tickets much in advance, but you could take advantage of the Amica fare if you purchase they day before and use the Eurostar train.

You’ll note that there are other trains…some are slower and may cost less.

Use this website to check on train schedules and fares:

From Foggia you take a SITA bus to San Giovanni, a trip of about an hour.

This website gives some advice about when to go, which days are busiest, where to catch the bus, etc.

I do apologise.

I put it down to my increasing years and failing eyesight. :-(

And reading the post rather than the forum title.

According to

http://www.sacred-destinations.com/italy/san-giovanni-rotondo-padre-pio-shrine.htm

there is also a daily express bus from Roma Tiburtina station at 06:15.

http://www.ferroviedelgargano.com/

has info (in Italian) and you can buy a ticket online from that link (a good idea).

http://www.ferroviedelgargano.com/prenotazione.htm

is the search engine which will give you times/fares.
