You must go to Lecce, one of the most beautiful and charming towns in Southern Italy, absolutely heaving with churches in the totally over the top Lecce Baroque style. Stay at Albergo Capello. You can see the backside of it as you pull into central station. It's clean, comfortable and reasonably priced.

Take the Ferrovia Appulo-Lucano train to Matera in Basilicata. (You have to change in Altamura.) This is the strangest city in Italy, called "The Capital of Nowhere", the usual hideous concrete modern city, and in the center two immense gorges packed with troglodyte dwellings and odd churches. You can wander for hours.Stay at Albergo Roma on Via Roma. Spotless, basic, friendly, and very cheap.

If you like Norman churches, Trani has one of the best, right on the shore. Ditto Molfetta, which is a particularly attractive town with it's brightly painted buildings. Beware the long midday siesta time closing.

Went to the famous Alberobello recently, and found it so buried in touristic tack that it was hard to enjoy the small trulli areas. But you can buy some very interesting drink there. Came away with a bottle of basil liqueur.

BTW (shameless plug), I have a Bari page here.

Enjoy Puglia.

See my Trani, Polignano and Lecce pages, too.
But lecce and other places suggested are a little too far.
Trani, Polignano, Ruvo di Puglia, Castel del monte (with the famous Frederic the II castel), Barletta are nearer...

Trani a real must. If you'll sleep there, my advice for hotel is Hotel Regia....(without a tip yet) nice tiny hotel just 20 meters from the cathedral, price 120/150 euros for a large double room and breakfast . The position is the real plus of the hotel.

Ciao
Francesco
