february in alghero

by szwandtkj

is there enough to do here fo 4 days in winter without a car?

Generally speaking it's better to visit Sardinia, and its places,
with a car/motorbike/bike.
Alghero is really nice, it has a pretty historic centre and
wonderful surroundings (especially shelves), but it is a small
town (40.000 inhabitants)
So, it's up to you!!!

Hey there,

i went there for 3 days in December, but just walked the town, the beach, had coffee and beer. I people watched and got the bus to Fertilia (€0.57) for the afternoon.
In the evenings I just wandered through the town looking for a nice restaurant.
But then I wanted to do nothing for 3 days.
It was perfect. Totally relaxed going home.

Travel Tips for Alghero

Lovely seafood!

by oneonta_ni about Al Tuguri

This restaurant was mentioned in a couple guide books so we decided to check it out. We were not disappointed! The word 'tuguri' means hovel but this is the nicest hovel I've seen!

They have a regular menu but also do a 5 course fish based menu and a 5 course lobster based menu. The first was 50,000 lire per person and the second was only 70,000 lire. It is located in one of the many gothic 'palaces' that crowd the old town in Alghero.
Besides the lovely surroundings of the old building, it was nice to see that the other diners were all Italian. The service was excellent and the chef himself takes the order. He recommended a wine which happened to be the cheapest on the menu and was quite tastey. The total price was around 130,000 lira for 2 five course meals and wine. We had the 5 course fish based menu and it went as follows:

Starter: 1/2 melon with a delicious seafood salad in it. The salad had a nice light coating of olive oil, not one of those heavy sauces that spoil the flavour. There were also marinated herrings and a piece of cucumber which had been hollowed out and some seafood mousse squeezed in. All very tastey.

Next was tagliatelle with a light seafood sauce. Along with this was served a sort of stew. I don't know what it was but I think it may have been a local dish called 'favata di fave', a stew made with pork rinds and beans.

Fourth course was deliciously roasted 'spigola' or sea bass. It was perfectly cooked and along with it was grilled squid.

The dessert has totally slipped my mind...

Alghero, Sardinia

"Alghero"

My favourite city in Sardinia! Lots of places to see and things to do. The beach is unreal! Check out the Old City, Cappa Caccia, The Port, rent a car and take the coastal route down to Bosa Marina, the drive is unbelievable!
