transport from the Airport to Alghero in the evening??

by Rudadiz

Hi we (me and the wife) will be travelling to Alghero between 11th and 19th of September. Basically I took the cheapest flight option available, which gets to the airport at 8:40 pm on a tuesday. Now I understand that the airport is quite far away from the town but I got the impression from some sources that there is a bus service at the airport waiting for every flight arrival?? Is that actually true?? If not does the local pick up bus (no 9 was it?) run in the evenings? Or if anyone has any other transport recommendations - I 'd hate to get in a taxi where I know little local language (basic Italian but know nothing about Catalan), and being charged 30-40 euros for a (say) 10-euro journey.

On a related note: if we don't hire a car, what day trips/overnight trips are recommended to do in Sardinia? We have a week so I m thinking one day in Fertilia and probably an overnight (i.e.2 days)somewhere south Sardinia. Any recommendations would be very helpful!!

Grazie!

I hav posted Taxi information at http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/8ec24/263e6/9/

The algherese Catalan is far removed from what you hear in Catalunya (compared to the English of the Canterbury Tales)and if Catalan is not your first language you will struggle -however, basic Italian will be fine for Alghero, no one looked blankly at me and answeredin Catalan

Travel Tips for Alghero

Little villages

by littlebush

I think just going to Sardinia is a little off the beaten track, well, I havent seen the east of the island but in the west near Alghero, we hardly saw any tourists and there are no huge resorts or hotels. Its worth visiting some of the smaller towns/villages in the area. Stintino in the far north is a lovely small fishing village with La Pelosa beach nearby. Fertillia near Alghero is a lovely town.
Bosa is abig bigger but on the stunning drive from Alghero to Bosa, theres some tiny villages to stop at.

Excursions around Alghero

by Paisleypaul

There are as of 2007 a few players in providing escursioni - day trips and half day trips around Alghero and Northern (predominantly Northwestern) Sardinia.

On 14th August there is a one-off trip to Sassari's Candeleri - covered in my Sassari pages, but probably as easy certainly cheaper to go under your owen steam.
We did Stintino (half day trip , on my Stintino page) and Costa Smeralda, a full day's tour of the North East and Emerald Coast.

Other trips are boat trips, Castelsardo (half day - trying to do this 2009 trip) and Bosa (full day).

Be aware that sometimes if they do not realize minimum numbers the trip gets cancelled the night before - they will fax your hotel.

The web link I provided is dated 2006 and has a _2005 part of the web address - was all still going August 2007, the same trips will be available if there has been a rebranding or through a competitior if DuneViaggi n olonger do trips/ excursions
