The Roman Bridge, Fertilia
by mazzap
The Roman Bridge can be found between Alghero & Fertillia. It actually dates back to medieval times.
Sadly, it is now only half it's original length & is a crumbling ruin. It had to be partly demolished to make way for it’s replacement, a larger modern structure that is much more practical in these modern times.

The tour company we were traveling with had several arranged but we chose two of them. The first was a half day trip to Castelsardo, on the North coast of the island.
Our journey took us inland a bit and we drove past small farms with hedges of cactus and agave. The ground was just starting to turn green again from the autumn rains and there were a lot of sheep. We also passed the Sella e Mosca winery - the largest one in Sardinia. We drove through the town of Porto Torres and saw Turis Libisonis, a Roman structure and also saw a bridge built by the Romans. Nearby was an Aragonese tower. Further on we stopped to look at a strangely formed rock which was just at the side of the road. During the Nuraghic period (Iron Age), the local people had carved tombs in the rock and it was covered in smallish square holes. Nearby was the town associated with the tomb and there was a tower next to it.
Organised tours like this are not everyone's cup of tea but for us, with only a week on the island and because it was our first time there, we found it a nice way to see some of the sites.
