ALGERO area

by joehancock

Hi
My wife and I along with our 19 yr old daughter are flying in and out of Alghero ,spending six nights in the area .As yet no firm plans or bookings.Generally thinking of travelling just a little bit ,perhaps hiring a car....just sunning ..snorkelling/diving...and a bit of sight-seeing.
Any tips on where to stay..how best to book...is the train ride a good idea ...car hire ...etc. would be appreciated...Thanks
Joe NZ

When are you flying in and out of Alghero?
since these days till middle of August would be every day harder and harder to find a place to stay.
my main advice is.. since now, hire a car BEFORE (and from OUTSIDE) of Sardinia.

You could pick up lonely planet or rough guide Sardinia cheap on ebaY or amazon. Lots of information from the airport website
http://www.aeroportodialghero.it/home_en.asp more still on what-to-do at
http://www.hellosardinia.com/eng/alghero/alghero.htm and also at http://www.algherosardinia.net/ with city webcams at
http://www.algheroweb.it/webcam_alghero_sardinia_uk.htm and my own efforts(!)
http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/8ec24/263e6/ where you will find all my personal recommendations
We are going back for 16 nights in August - really saw something we liked here.

Hi Joe

Expect my first choice of hotel (Where we'll be staying 6-22 August) will be full, I think you really need to book up quickly, that week is the ferragosoto holiday and some may be reluctant to offer 2 days and lose the chance of getting a clean week booking (as elsewhere Italy generally) that time. You'll e OK ! No panic but you do really want to get this sorted next few days I would suggest

Travel Tips for Alghero

Bar Dragunara

by Paisleypaul

This may be nearer Fertilia than Alghero but was certainly located at neither !

The boat trip to Neptune's Grotto stopped here - I don't know if that is de rigeur or just because the grotto was shut due to choppy seas.

Other people had driven to this spot, presumably from Fertilia

Grotta di Nettuno - You Rock!

by Paisleypaul

The Grotta di Nettuno is about 10 miles / 15 km from Alghero along the Capo Caccia. it is a spectacular cave full of unique rock formations and stalactites.
Best way is to sail here - by Nava Sardi, see transport tip - but do make sure teh sea is like a duck pond as it will be closed due to no safe access if AT ALL choppy. Took us 2 atempts at sailing to get entry - if not accessible you will go sailing around rhe Capo Caccia and probably stop at the Bar Dragunura spot (see off the beaten path tip).

Also accessible by hire bike taxi or bus and a walk down the stairs form the cliff face - just be sure you're OKwiththe climb abck up. (Choppier seas mean still no access this way either)

Note that you pay for entry and tour over and above the boat trip - not expensive though.
