Car Hire Question
by Plly
We arrive in Alghero on Saturday and would really like to hire an old Italian Fiat 500, not a standard hire car. Does anyone out there know if this is possible?

Don't know if it's possible, but start with the usual suspects at the airport car hire, Hertz Avis & Europcar

great location for a trip - we'll be back in August

No way you will find an old 500 at a regular car hire. The newer are from '77...
There are plenty, but all in hands of amateurs....
You can only hope on one of them.....
And, by the way, keep in mind that the nice 500 is a pleasure to drive, but not so easy to get used to the non-sync gear box!
Ciao

Ah, Francesco, I had forgotten about the gear box...I just remembered that in case of emergency, two grown men (one on each bumper) could lift/bounce the car out of the way if it blocked the street(!).
Hard to believe that I once got myself and 5 students in an old Fiat 500!!! It almost didn't make it up the hill ;-)

Bill, it would take a whole night and maybe more than a single amarone bottle just sampling a few of the things our generation did with/inside a Fiat 500!
Ciao!

Travel Tips for Alghero
Walk Between Alghero & Fertilia
by mazzap
Fertilia is the next town along the coast from Alghero & can be easily reached by foot though prepare for a fairly long (about 7km) walk! We walked along the beach most of the way, then up onto the road when the beach ran out! Assume you'll be walking back too as public transport seemed a bit scarce!
Although it is small & seemingly ‘uninteresting’ on first appearances it has a quaint & calm feel to it. The buildings are mostly post war. Personally I thought the ‘modern’ churches & monuments were architecturally rather unattractive. Several restaurants can be found here, also nice views across the sea to Alghero old town & there are pretty coastal walks around rugged pathways. A place that is worth a short visit at least!
Palazzo Machin (Casa Doria)
by gildapaolina
The house was built in early XVI century by catalan workers. It's a fully-sandstone building; windows have been integrated in a small-columned prospect and dazzlingly decorated with catalan gothic and renaissance themes.
This palace was once called 'Casa Doria' (Doria's house), relating to family which Alghero foundation in XIII century has been often associated to. But probably real owner was the Bishop Ambrogio Machin: he lived here during XVII century.
