StreetSan Giorgio War Hospital in the caves
In 1941 Italy was in the middle of World Second War. Italian Red Cross was present as medical help on entire national area (likewise on colonies and on african, balcanic and russian battlefields), creating military hospitals and other sort of ad-hoc structures, when possible. San Giorgio Military Hospital was one of those extemporary structures, created in the heart of Viale Merello caves, a logistic and prudent alternative for in-patients during airstrikes. Moreover, San Giorgio was the only working military hospital in Cagliari during the acme of war, particularly between february and may 1943 bombings.
After the war ended the hospital followed giving its aid to generic diseased, until shutdowns and creation of a permanent Civil Hospital in the city centre.
