Casita Deluca: Holiday home in the country side close to the sea

In 2006 we wanted to see more of the beautiful Island of Sicily because during our first stay we stayed mainly on one location and from there we did one-day trips. We decided to book a room in a couple of Bed & breakfasts that were located close to the sea and go from one to the other and see as much of the islands coast as possible. A friend of ours told us he knew a family in Balestrate (near Palermo) who just started renting their house as a holiday home and that we could stay there for a low price. We decided to go there and we didn't regret it for one moment! The house is in the quiet country side of Balestrate on a hill and even with the hot Sicilian weather, there was always a little wind coming from the sea that made our stay even more pleasant. The house has three bedrooms, two small bathrooms with shower and a big living and open kitchen. One night the owner came by to cook for us some typical sicilian dishes and we enjoyed eating outside on the "terrazza". We paid 70 Euros a night and had the house to ourselves for almost a week (in the end we decided to stay a little longer than we'd planned because we were very pleased with the accomodation).

Unique Quality: It's clear that the owner wishes you to have a good time which you can also see from the fact that, if you like, he'll come over one night and cook for you! Although the house is in the country side, you're still close to the sea. You can reach the beach or the center of the town in a couple of minutes. Balestrate has a nice beach (also with lido), a nice little forest and the sea is just breathtaking. From the balcony of the house you can see the sun go down and every night the colored sky and Golfo di Castellammare form a different but always beautiful painting. You're close to Palermo and Trapini (almost right in the middle) so if you come by plane you can either land at Birgi in Trapani or Falcone Borsellino in Palermo. If you want you can be picked up from the airport if you're not planning on renting a car (like we did). There are several restaurants and pizzerias nearby and for those who like dancing, there are three discotheques in the neighborhood (one of them close to the sea). Towns nearby are: Partinico, Alcamo, Scopello, Castellammare del Golfo and the bigger cities Palermo and Trapani. For those who like culture: you'll find you will not have time enough to see everything that's worth seeing (that's why we keep coming back to this beautiful island!). There's Erice, the saline at Marsala, the temple and amphitheater at Segesta and in Palermo and Trapani you'll also find a lot of historic buildings/churches etc. (the Teatro Massimo in Palermo for instance is very beautiful!). Nature lovers will also have a great time here: nearby is the nature reserve "Riserva dello Zingaro" and there are lot's of places where you can have a nice walk or see nature on horseback. Don't forget about all the delicious sicilian dishes and if you like wine, you should try the wines for which Alcamo is famous or one of the great "Nero d'Avola"s.
