Birthplace of Grandparents
Both of my grandparents were born in Campobella di Licata, Sicily in the late 1800's. I am planning a trip to Sicily and would like to know the best way to begin to find their birth certificates and a little bit about their early years. They emmigrated to New York in the early 1900's.

Many births of the 1800's in Sicily were recorded by the church of the town. Start with the Cathedral Church of St. John the Baptist in Campobella di Licata. also check for a cemetary that has burials of the 1800's to find older relatives. Try also the Town Hall. Some checking will also find the ship that brought them, most likely to Ellis Island, if you know when they came to New York and their age. Try Ellis Island website: http://www.ellisisland.org/

You can prepare your trip by contacting in advance the City Hall office in charge for birth certificates (ufficio anagrafe).

you can go to ellis island search and it is a free site to begin to see if there is a ship manifest for your grandparents. it is a great site.
I also know someone who lives in sicily who will do the search for you in their hometown, but there is a cost. i have used him with great success. he will send their certificate of birth to you. if interested, please feel free to e-mail me.
