Catania, Mt Etna and related issues
I am planning to visit Sicily for 5 days in late March 2008. Please would you kindly advise the following:
1. Is Catania the best place to stay if we are spending a day in Mount Etna, say, overnight stay in Catania?
2. Assuming that Catania is our 'base', what trains or buses are available to catch to go up to Mount Etna (I read this on some websites before)?
3. What 'destination' should we be aiming for for a day-trip to the Mount Etna?
4. How much does it cost? Transportation? Entry fee to the National Park?
Many thanks for all your help in advance.
I look forwarding to hearing from you.
Re: Catania, Mt Etna and related issues
To my point of view the best place to stay is not Catania but Taormina a small and very famous resort in Sicily.
The train doesn't arrive up to the top of Etna
From Taormina you can take trip up to Mount Etna. the cost is from 40 to 70 euros per person
There excursions leave from Taormina and they are very good organized www.sat-group.it
If you want something special you can have an excursion up to Etna and its winery http://www.sicilylimousineservice.com/sicily/index.htm
also you can use them for airport transfer.
I hope you are having fun in my island
Travel Tips for Catania
Piazza IX Aprile, 7. I-98039 - Taormina (ME) / Phone: (+39) 0942/625302. Fax: (+39) 0942/625302.
In one of the most charming corners of Taormina, in the centre of the Corso and facing the enchanting panorama of the Bay of Naxos, with Etna in the background, since the start of the century the Cafè Wunderbar has been the perfect place to relax after sighseeing or shopping, after a day by the sea or a night after a show.
Try the traditional cocktails (savoured by the celebrities who have made Taormina famous: Howard Agg, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Greta Garbo, Roger Peyrefritte, Tennessee Williams).
Sicilian ice creams and traditional crushed ice drinks (granite).
"3yrs was great, but long enough"
If there is one area I know...It's sicily. I spent three years there and really enjoyed the beaches, the friends, and the hospitality of the Sicilians. Great Place to visit, and awesome history behind the Island.
