Catania - Where to stay?

by Zetajones

Hi

Please could someone assist me. I'm trying to find the best spot to book a Hotel for 1 day and night in Catania. We're a family of 2 adults and 2 kids under 8 years of age and we're wanting a really comfortable, good, 3/4/5 star Hotel situated close to the Airport as we have an early flight out the next morning i.e. Monday 13 July. We arrive from Panarea on 12 July midday and obviously want to fit in some small sightseeing. Where is the best place to stay? I've looked at the Grand Baia Verde Hotel on the cliff - that looks good, but is it not out of the way? So, there I thought the Liberty was the place and now I see it's in a bad area?

Do any of the Hotels accommodate families with 2 double rooms and an interleading suite i.e. 2 bedroom family suite? Most of them have come back with wanting to put us all in one room with a foldout sofa for the kids- what's with that?

I need to book something asap today, so please post a reply as soon as possible.

Ciao - much appreciated!

P.S. I've come across a lot of posts about Airport shuttles not being available and the rip off of taxi fares. Is there anything I'm missing?

Hi,
I'll advice you to stay at Romano Palace Hotel. I used to go there often for my work and it suites your needs. They have a free shuttle to the airport and they're quite close to the airport. The staff is very friendly and the food in the restaurant is great, also the breakfast. Not to mention that your 2 steps from the beach and behind the hotel there's a forest.
In alternative there's Hotel Parco degli Aragonesi right close to the Romano Palace. I like it less becuase the staff is less friendly...

Thanks very much for this. What one thing do you suggest we try fit in as sightseeing in such limited time?

U can visit taormina, a nice town half an hour from Catania or visit the sea side in Catania (Acitrezza and Acicastello). Very nice with a small castle, a nice view and u can eat a very very good granita with fresh cream and brioche.

Both hotels are having a free charter bus that could bring you in the center of Catania. The night life there is great and you could see the duomo and maybe do some shopping in Via Etnea, before or after ;-)

CATANIA

by RAZOR-REN

A DIRTY CITY! DIDN'T LIKE THE PLACE AS IT WAS FULL OF OPEN SEWERS AND STRAY DOGS & CATS. OVERLOOKING THE CITY HOWEVER WAS THE VOLCANO MOUNT ETNA WHICH IS CONSTANTLY ACTIVE AND YOU CAN SEE IT SMOKING EVERY 5 MINUTES FROM IT'S SUMMIT.

MY 2ND TRIP TO CATANIA:
IT HAS BEEN 20 YEARS SINCE I'VE BEEN THERE. WE DECIDED TO GO THERE TO CHECK IT OUT ON THE MORNING OF THE DAY WE WERE DUE TO FLY BACK HOME AFTER SPENDING A DAY AND A HALF ON MOUNT ETNA VOLCANO. I ACTUALLY FOUND THAT IT WASN'T TOO BAD AND WE EVEN GOT TO SEE ALOT OF THE CITY ON ONE OF THOSE ROAD TRAIN THINGS FOR A TOUR IN PRETTY 45 MINS. THE TRAFFIC AROUND CATANIA WAS BAD MIND YOU.
