by clarelennon

Hi I am planning a trip from malta to Taormina in August and want to also visit Catania. If i wee to stay 1 night in Catania where would you recommend? or if i want to just spend aday there what should i do?

I also need to know how regular buses are to Taormina and how late they travel or where to get this information. Many thanks.

Suggest you try Interbus:
type in departure point Catania and arrivo Taormina for time table. Stayed in area couple of years ago and used these buses for transport. Only slight problem is nothing runs on time. Patience is a virtue! Same goes for all forms of transport - private bus trips; trains, ferries etc . Don't plan critical transfers from one transport mode to another without building in lots of flexibility.
Our visit to Catania included Opera House, University Gardens, Etna lava flow intruding into town centre, and culinary delights of brioche and almond sorbet.
Have fun de p.

Trains are excelltn from Catania to Taormina - but you need to get from the station at Taormina up the hill to the town so its a bus or taxi at that end.

Its probabaly easier to stay in Taormina and visit Catania just for a day

Travel Tips for Catania

Good food, lousy service

by rsilva about Officina Gastonomica

This is a modern restaurant in the center of Catania, with a very nice, stylish decor.

Almost everything I have eaten here is good (Pizza, pasta, risotto, etc) and the menu seems to change quite often. I even had a good, thick (for Italian standards) steak here, which is quite rare.

However, there is just no excuse for the poor service. Waiters/waitresses are rude and extremely slow. It usually takes 20-30 minutes just to get someone to come over to your table, after which you have to wait quite a while for the main course as well. If you are brave enough to complain or at least point out that you have been waiting long, you are treated with indifference in the best case and get a somewhat rude reply in the worst.

If you are not in a hurry and do not get frustrated easily, you can have a good meal here (well, it is Sicily, so that is more or less standard).

Pizzas/pastas cost less than 10 Eur and mains are slightly more expensive. Expect to pay 15-20 Eur for a two-course meal with wine. I had an excellent tuna risotto with peppers once. It was absolutely delicious.
One of my favourite pizza's, Parmiggiana, is also available here. I think it is typically Sicilian, so you will probably not find it anywhere else in Italy.

Chaos And Beauty, Be Sure To Eat A Lot

"Do Not Believe What People Say"

We were warned by many people that this was a wide open town. A man in Licata made rather grave statements about Catania. Well our experience was just the opposite. We found a very beautiful place with vibrant friendly people. It was very engaging to be on one busy and bustling street and then turn down a street and find a quiet square with students and cafés. This is a great place to visit.

We had excellent food at every place we ate. The service we recived was also excellent.

The market is the most vibrant and well stocked of any I have seen in Italy. Maybe anywhere. Fish, olives, cheese, bread, meat, fruit, veg, all tumbled together in a wonderful market.

In a nearby park the men gather to play a rather serious card game under the trees. The vendors argue over all the transactions. The fish guys act like they got took every time the make the deal. It is a gas just to watch.

"Unique and Beautiful Buildings"

The black stone that most of the city is made of is just breathtaking, It is a little overwhelming at first. It really works well. I often think of this when I am remembering Sicily.

Near the university the effect is at it’s best. There were wide pedestrian friendly streets and squares. Cafes and shops lining the streets. We had some very nice times here.
