CATANIA
The second most important city of Sicilyhas a few highlights (Cathedral of Sain Agatha and the Elephant Fountain, with a mysterious volcanic-rock elephant on base, the Roman anfiteatro, several wonderful churches) and is a good 'Basecamp' for trips to Etna, Taormina...
Mt Etna
by Alice-Kees
Watching the results of the most recent eruptions on the slopes of Mt Etna yourself, is a very impressive thing to do. You can go there on an organized excursion or by your own transport. Circumstances near the summit change by every eruption. When we were there (May 2002), 4 wheel drive vehicles were touring up and down the slopes to get you as close to the summit as considered safe by then. This service ran in stead of the cable car, which is still mentioned in many books, but was destroyed in the 2001 eruptions. After the eruptions later in 2002, so I understood, the 4WD service has ceased operation too.

Catania

"At Etna's feet"
Catania has always been considered one of the most
important cities in Sicily.
Subjected to Etna's fickle temperament, Catania has been damaged by lava flows and earthquakes on several occasions. A particularly destructive volcanic eruption in 1669 was followed by a serious earthquake in 1693.
You can find a painting of this eruption inside the Cathedral.
"Visit it!!"
For all its Baroque grandeur, the city is not frequented by the number of tourists who flock to Palermo and even Syracuse and
Taormina, most of whom just briefly pass through Catania on their way to Mount Etna or Syracuse. That's unfortunate because,
like Messina, Catania has a great deal to offer those willing to unveil its historic treasures. Even during a brief itinerary, this
very special city is worth at least a few hours of your time.
You can check with Catania's Tourism Office: they're always organising walk tour of half a day around the City. This will help
you to discover what interesting in Catania without losing time....
