Bus from train station to Airport in Catania on Christmas day

by bct341

will the bus from the Catania train station to the airport (Alibus 457) be running on Christmas day? And, will the hours be the same as posted on their website http://www.amt.ct.it/PercorsieOrari.php or be different because of the holiday? Also, what is the cost of the bus? Thanks

Your link is good. All you have to do is click on 457 and only watch the "FESTIVO" timetable. Still in Sicily is better not to take too serious a timetable and if you have to catch a plane maybe you'd better take a cab :-)

:) I agree about not taking time tables too seriously in Italy but hopefully the bus will be running. I did not see anything on their website showing different hours for Christmas so that is hopeful.

Travel Tips for Catania

Dining under the arches

by baronedivandastad about Sicilia in Bocca

This place has a very exotic setting, dug into the old city walls and with a terrace facing directly the arches of Marina, on top of which the main railway line runs.

We dined here in late August and were promptly accommodated in the terrace. The pasta of the day was really good, a combination of swordfish, almonds and pistachio. The pasta with vegetables and seafood was delicious as well.

As a main course, we ordered fish in the "cartoccio", that is wrapped in alluminium. it was delicate in taste and evidently fresh.

The wine they proposed with this was an interesting 100% Catarratto, which I thought did not quite fit with the taste of the fish as it was very strong in alcohol. Perhaps a blend of Inzolia would have been more suited.

The desserts were good: we had ananas and panna cotta with wild strawberries. A note of praise for the excellent bread.

Coffee came lukewarm and was bad, not a good ending for an otherwise good meal. Too bad the bill was also way higher than expected - is 37 euros a good price for 700 g of fish, however good? The pasta with swordfish, almonds and pistacchio seemed to be a bit above everything else.

Villa Bellini

by ICBT

Catania is a heavy, darkly-colored stone city under a brilliant blue sky. Rarely however is the grey, black, blue and brown relieved by the green of vegetation. This is what makes Villa Bellini such a wonderful change. This is really a large park, named after the famous Catanese composer. There are small amusements for children, fields for gaming, and the occassional snack vendor to complement the otherwise peaceful and serene daytime atmosphere. And of course, always a perfect spot to publicly display your affection for your significant other, which the Catanese students do with verve paralleled only by the Romans.

There is lots and lots of statuary in the park - most of it has been singularly vandalized: the noses have been broken off. I never found out if this has some particular meaning or whether it was just random meanness, but the statues themselves are still nice to wander through. The park is fairly clean and feels safe, as it is completely urban and not unmanageably large. It is, however, closed at night.
