Day Sail - Where?

by gritz71

Looking for a day sail on a sail boat or catamaran either from Catania and around the east coast, or from north end around aeolian islands. Ideas?

We've done a 7 days cruise around the aeolian islands from Millazo(40 km west of Messina).
But you can reach the Aeolian Islands (Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Filicudi, Alicudi, Panarea & Stromboli) by ferry and hydrofoil.
Milazzo is the main departure point for the Aeolian Islands. Several ferries and hydrofoils leave daily throughout the year, and stop in several islands. For example it takes 1hr 30 minutes to reach Salina by hydrofoil (3hr 40 minutes by ferry).

If you really want to sail, Aeolian Island (wonderful) are not within a day trip range....
Unless you have An America's cup trimaran...

Why not?
There are several one day trips to the Islands.
SAT, from Taormina http://www.sat-group.it/excursion_en.asp?cod=summer

There are hydrofoils from Milazzo and Messina. Ferries from Milazzo. Services are more frequent in summer.

Travel Tips for Catania

Used to be worse

by baronedivandastad about Antica Marina

UPDATE: I visited this place again as part of a large group in March 2006. I got the impression that the quality of food had improved since the previous time I went there (see below). In particular, the grilled fish was a class of its own. Also, the wine list is pretty large, perhaps they have enlarged it (though I didn't pay too much attention to it the previous time).

However, the service is still sloppy and waiters somehow look too busy (which in Italy means they're not in control). Also, the fact that they let in players of traditional instruments somehow gives an impression of a touristy place.

I'm not aware of the bill as the dinner was paid by someone else. I may go again

--------------

OLD (April 2005): Antica Marina was recommended to me by a friend who works as a manager in a local company. I tried it expecting some astounding fish but the fare was relatively standard.

Now you have to get things into perspective when you hear this comment. We're in Catania, perhaps the Italian capital of seafood, so anything which I rate here as "standard" would fare around the "extremely good" category in the rest of Italy.

This said, I wasn't astonished. Sure, the swordfish pasta was great, and the mixed antipasto provided for much more than a simple appetizer. However, the service was sloppy, the coffee lukewarm (mortal sin!) and the bill outrageous.

Overall, I don't think I'll go there again. There's much better food for lower prices around this city. The grilled fish platter was a remarkable experience. The low-ish rating I give to this place is not due to the bad food, but rather to the commercial, touristy atmosphere and matching service.

The Fish Market

by ICBT

I pescivendoli, the fish merchants, hawk their wares here, making this one of the stinkiest places in Catania, but certainly also a must stop for any discerning culture-buff or seafood fan. I, being Alaskan, peer down my big nose at Sicily's fish out of pride, but don't you be so dumb! To test your true tourist grit try buying a kilo of squid from a toothless, shouting fisherman.

Anyway, the one in Palermo is really famous, and this one is exactly the same, only in a way cooler part of town.

Interesting fact: the pescivendoli's candelora during the festival of St. Agata is my favorite!
