catania

by vallmtmt

I am planning to go for a day to catania. I already went to Taormina and Etna so taught of doing something different. I would like to know what nice beaches are there and where can I find the aqua park?

Hi, If you're looking for good clean beaches, Catania is not the place. There is a lot of pollution in the ocean here. There is one passable beach on the way to the airport but i would not, personally, swim in these waters.
As for the 'aqua park' do you mean 'Etnaland'. This is the only theme park I know of in the environs of Catania.
From Catania take the ring road - 2nd exit to Misterbianco then SS121 Misterbianco-Paterno road. Exit for Valcorrente and the park is sign posted.

Hi,
Are the beaches really so bad around Catania? If away from the port where does the polution come from? Where is the nearest OK beach.

Thanks,
baltic

Catania's beaches are pretty grim. The coast, north of Catania is pretty rocky until you reach Giardini Naxos. There are a few small beaches in between but mostly used by locals for beachcasting(fishing)and the like

We just came from there. I wouldn´t say that the beaches in Catania are polluted - they are just very "rocky" and it is hard to go into the water if you don´t have swimming shoes. Otherwise the water there was of a very nice temperature and you could see fishes:-)

For pollution count around Catania check out:

Pay particular attention to the last sentence.

Hi,
Now back in sunny London. When I was in Catania went to one of the Lidos, about 2 km South of the airport. Beautiful sandy beach and apparently clean water. I think the beaches may be cleaner now. The northern side of the airport the beach looked a little less clean. This is long beach. The water in Taormina was very clear with a lot of small fish but there are many rocks and a lot of people , relatively.

Haha - welcome back - glad you found clean beaches. They've obviously been doing some work around Catania.

Travel Tips for Catania

Go on the top of the vulcano...

by Insider

Go on the top of the vulcano Etna! It was one of the most beautiful sites I saw in Sicily and definitely most exciting!! We arrived on the top of Etna by a small terain bus, which drove us almost in the lava itself. It wasn't that close, but it was still a wonderful experience to see lava running down the hill just a few meters a head of you!You can see the picture of it on the left, where I burned my snickers(they melted), because it was so hot!! But beside the lava, there was also a lot of interesting vulcano stones-a lot of different colours!! There were also the people who made ashtrays from lava-that was quite an interesting thing to see, because they were selling this ashtrays for 20$ at the bottom of Etna and here a man made in like 20 seconds!

Take a walk through the city

by happyhourkid

You'll hear me say this as a top suggestion whenever you are visiting a new place. There is no better way to experience a new place than on foot. Take a walk around town and take notice of the architecture. If it's one terrific thing I can say about Catania, it's that from many places around town you can also capture Mount Etna in the background of many things you'll want to take pictures of.

If you like street vendors, you'll see plenty of them in Catania. Although many of them sell fresh procude, some sell novelties as well.

The black village

by DrDizzy

The moment I arrived in Catania, my reaction to what I saw was: "what the ***, let's get out of this place." What looked revoking, turned out to be the most interesting place in the mediterranean area!
Houses look black from former eruptions of mount Etna. The city centre radiates friendlyness. You can find a most bizar vibe in the city.q
