Five Days on the Sicilian East Coast

by physiar

I am planning a four or five day vacation on the Sicilian East Coast. The basic plan is the following:

Day 1 - Fly into Catania, early to mid-morning, and spend day in Catania (Sights, markets, etc)
Day 2 - Climb Etna (perhaps with organised tour?)
Day 3 - Go by bus to Siracusa, spend the day there, and return in late afternoon (5-ish?) by train or bus, spend evening in Catania
Day 4 - Rent a car to Acireale, Taormina, Linguaglossa, Randazzo
Day 5 - Morning in Catania, catch plane back home (Malta) in afternoon...

So, now the questions:
1. Would you recommend going by public transport, then rent a car to go to Linguaglossa/Randazzo or rent the car in Catania and drive from there?
2. Could anyone direct me at a site that offers Etna tours?
3. Acireale - is it worth the hassle?
4. What do you think in general? Too much, too little, too boring? I will be among friends (4 or 5 including me).

I didint include Messina/Milazzo on purpose - I'd do those on a separate trip along the Northern coast. Same goes for Noto, which could go in along a south coast trip.

10x in Advance...
Chris!

Ero in Sicilia per 6 mesi e seconod me devi vedere:
*Agrigento
*Gibelina Nuova (una citta stranisima. Mai ho visto una citta come Gibelina Nuova)
*Etna
*Taormina
*Parco Zingaro e San Vito Lo Capo (insieme)

A presto!

Haha, I too would recommend Agrigento but now we were talking about the east so here are my comments:

Stay in Siracusa for a bit of the evening too if you can as Ortygia, the central island is very romantic then with families eating along the seaside (and not much is open in the way of restaurants there in the afternoons if you get hungry yourself of course...).

You don't need a whole day to visit Etna's summit but can combine it with Randazzo and Linguaglossa. It is nice to be flexible and drive yourself in this region but otherwise you have the Circumetnea railway from Catania as you might know. To get to the summit with a guide, try http://www.sicilylife.com/ or perhaps this one: http://www.geoetnaexplorer.it/

Thanks a lot for the help! Will try the websites tonight.
Preferred an organised tour because I've never been on a mountain/volcano before and wouldn't know what and how to do it...
Read about the circumetnea - will take it into consideration while planning...

I think we'll take transport to Taormina and rent a car in Taormina to go to Linguaglossa and Randazzo instead of renting it all the way down in Catania...

10x again for the help!

Travel Tips for Catania

Piazza Armenina

by GUYON

see the Villa del Casale at Piazza Armenina (part 2)
I ignore if the erotic pics are available on VT.
This one has the advantage to be ancient and widely broadcasted. It is a mosaic which is on the pavement of the main slipping room (they did not watch TV).
The scene is reprinted on the t-shirts, the cards and the other souvenirs sold in the surrounding gift shops.

Castle in Catania

by dowdow

... or actually the ruins of a castle in Catania. In the evening, one night, we went with the group for a pizza and I saw this castle. No one could tell me anything of it however, and I searched on the internet as well, but couldn't find anything, so if you can tell me something about it, I'd really appreciate!

There were lots of people here and we also enjoyed a nice walk here along the promenade.

Sicily : earth, fire and water

by GUYON

Spring is the best period to visit Sicily. The weather is warm and there is few wind. The Island is crowdy in Summer.
There are a lot things to see there : nature especially the flowers, history (every people has invaded the Island : Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, leaving tracks of their culture), art (each church is beautifull), museum (antique).
The attached pic has been taken in Catania but I do not remember the name of the church (there are so many)
