Well, the train isn't very direct (all solutions go through Messina), but I can't find a bus line yet that goes across the island.

Go to and (after finding English at the top) enter "Catania" and "Cefalu" (the accent is not needed) - trains, with a connection in Messina, take 4 to 4.5 hours, except for one in the afternoon...

Travel Tips for Catania

Not your typical Gas Station food...

by rsleisk

Even the gas stations off the highways are good places to eat. I had many a delicious panini at these roadside oasis. You can get a gelato or other frozen popsicles, coffee, espresso, but best of all are the wide variety of paninis. Panini, the perfect handheld lunch.

Mostly Buried Roman Amphitheatre

One of the Tourism Board's guides told me that this was the third biggest amphitheatre in the Roman world in its day, after Rome and Verona. Dunno, could be, but you can't tell anymore. The place used to have three tiers, but the top two were dismantled to build other buildings, and the bottom one was mostly buried in lava and then subsequently built over. In the past Piazza Stesicoro completely covered it, but now they've excavated a part of it and you can go down inside and look around, for free, if the gate isn't locked (no ordinary schedule). There are tunnells, now gated up, that lead into other underground sections of ancient Catania. Spooky.
