Costs in Sardinia/Sicily

by seasidegirl

Please can someone give me an idea of costs in Sardinia and/or Sicily. I may have found a reaonably priced break but I don't want to blow the budget on food and transport costs.

Hi,
life is sardinia/sicily is cheap (but not in costa smeralda, taormina or crowded touristic places).
Don't worry for food and transport costs, you can have a lunch in a good restaurant with 20-30 euro per person. Transports depends on where you are and where do you want to go but they are reasonable.
i hope this will answer to your question.
Ciao,
nat

On Sicily, trains are cheaper and slower than coaches. However, not THAT much of a difference if you are going fast and want to save time. We paid ten euros each for a single coach trip Catania to Agrigento recently, to give you an example. That's a long journey for being Sicily.

As already said, be prepared to pay above average in Taormina (so, better as a daytrip than as a base - it has to be seen!). Southern Sicily is cheaper than the Etna region...

We just returned from a trip to Sicily in April. It was wonderful. The prices, compared to America were very inexpensive. If you are planning on going during the summer, I believe rates on hotels go up quite a bit. The food was a great bargain. We loved Palermo, Cefalu and Siracusa. If you are planning on going to Cefalu, look up www.sicilianbreak.it or www.dolcevitabb.it.

Cathedral Baptismal Font

by hquittner

In the crossing area is a baldachin-like structure which is actually an antique pulpit. Beneath it is a baptismal font from before1100 (older than the cathedral) It has rough lion heads suggesting that it was created by the Saracens.

"A Small Port City"

As our last day with a car we decided to visit Cefalu before going to our hotel in Palermo and ditching our car. We were told that nobody in their right mind would drive in Palermo. We left Monreale on S186 which became Corso Catalfimi. Long before we reached the Porta Nuova we truned right onto the Viale D. Regione Sicilia which took us around Palermo to the A19 and on to Cefalu(pop.18K). It is a busy, heavily trafficked town with narrow streets and wall-to-wall curbside parked cars and 3-4 story buildings that make it look dense. After 5-10 minutes of not locating a sign for a parking lot(there are some but how to find them) we headed toward the N (the port) and luckily found the railroad track (again) and saw the station. There was a secure lot there (fee) and waiting cabs (10 euro for 4)to take us the 1 km to the piazza del Duomo (saving time and nerves). Later when we returned we walked back since we realzied how "close" we were.

"Where the Action Is"

The Cathedral is the main sight in Cefalu. It sits at the S. edge of town nestled under a massive Gibraltar-like stone mass (300m high; the "Rocca"). Before this is the Piazza del Duomo and the rest of the town slopes down and around this to the port on a sheltered bay. From this shore E. & W, spread out beach communities. The restaurants, cafes and shops spread out around the Piazza and along the walking street adjacent to it.

"Where we did and did not go"

The port and its environs are worth seeing as are some ancient ruins on the Rocca which is wher the citizens took refuge in barbaric times. Our schedule only allowed time to walk down from the Piazza to the Museo, and later to walk back to our car at the Stazione some 4 blocks away.
