Travel Tips for Cefalú
Small family museum
The Museum shows - and you can see that also from the street - the ancient warehouse where oil was kept. There are huge eartenware containers ("giare") cased in the ground in the cave. This is where oil was kept, protected from the light.
Cefalu - Third time lucky !
Our first visit to Cefalu was in 2005. We were driving a 9 seater wagon that was ill equipped to enter the narrow maze of cobblestone streets. The further we ventured, the more narrow they became and the more voluminous the advice from the locals.
Senzo Unico (one way) was not a sign we were then familiar with. We though it was a destination ! So trapped we became. After some help from the locals and after getting about 20 cars to back up to let us out, we found our way out of the maze. We posted my 2 sons on each window and with a lick of paint seperating us from walls and parked cars we got through. The cars and scooters that honked and passed us as we exited into a wider stretch was hilarious. It was though we had uncorked a bottle of champagne.
The next visit was in 2008 in a smaller car and my mother in law had a bad fall on one of the cobblestone paths near Lungo Mare. Sensibly I had parked the car away from the narrow streets. However, I needed to bring the car to her and again found myself in a similar situation in narrow streets, but at least this time I could speak the language and indicate an emergency.
Our last visit in June was the first stress free visit we have had to Cefalu. We walked its cobblestone streets and marvelled at the idiots trying to drive down, what is predominantly a pedestrian area.
Nice beach, wonderful view of the old town from the Lungo Mare and a nice Marina on the other side of the mountain. If you like history and churches, take a walk down some of the backstreets to these easily found sites.
Some nice restaurants overlooking the water in the central part of the historic area.

"The Cathedral - unique and impressive"
Cefalù comes from the ancient Greek word for "head": Sicily was itself a Greek colony a couple of thousands years ago. As a matter of fact the position of Cefalù is very easy to detect along the Sicilian Northern coast, as the town overwhelmed by an enourmous round-shaped rock.
Right at the bottom of the cliff, the Cathedral has been erected by the Normands in XIII century, and it still is the centre of the town.
