Prestige: Self Catering in Ortigia

by dutchboycalledjan

We stayed in one of 5 or 6 apartments in a 18th Century palazzo, located in the centre of the historical old town of on Ortigia island, Syracusa in Sicily, a few steps away from piazza Duomo and Aretusa Fountain. The apartment building is in Via Salomone, in the neck of the snail. We had the "Prestige" appartment: two sleeping rooms, two bath rooms and a sunny terrace.

The owner, Massimiliano, was waiting for us and gave us very good tips.

The beautifully restored palace has a panoramic lift to the third floor. The apartment is tastefully furnished, renovated in 2006 using local materials (terracotta floor tiles, wooden beams...). My mother is in a wheel chair and the route to the lift is a bit of maze, and this is also the case of the stairs. Our apartment is located at the third floor, a few steps down the elevator, with a sunny terrace to have breakfast or relax.

This self catering accommodation proved an ideal base from which to explore Syracusa. Nearby are stores, cafes and there is the daily market, on the other side of the island. At night the streets were very quite but safe. Suitable for couple, families and business travellers this accommodation offers warm, welcoming and family atmosphere. This is - as always - a perfect alternative to staying in a hotel!

Very well equipped, three person apartment; sunny terrace; centre of Ortigia;

Villa Paci: beautiful villa

by Maramato

Villa Paci is a beautiful villa located in Pietraperzia in the heart of Sicily, a little off the beaten track so ideal if you like peace and quiet. From here, with a car, we visited many places including Cefalu, Etna and Agrigento

The villa accommodates 6 people quite comfortably. The views from the master bedroom are quite spectacular. A lovely pool for the sole use of the occupants is available. The Paci family have a separate property within the grounds.

Fiesta Hotel Garden Beach Campofelice di Roccella: A tourist bunker

by bianchis

Because the tunnel under the railway line leading to our hotel was blocked with water from the heavy rainfall, our chauffeur had to find his way through dark alley ways to get there. There were no signs and we were lost until a kindly local person took pity on us and led us to our destination.

The food here was monotonous and because it was buffet style it was always cold by the time you reached your table. However, there was plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. The bread left much to be desired.

The beach (manmade) was full of rocks and it was difficult to get into as it slooped quite steeply into the sea. The garden and surroundings were green and tropical but the pool was very shallow.

You had to pay a deposit of 20€ and 5€ for the laundry. I found this quite ridiculous to pay 5€ for laudering.

The rooms were spacious but our bathroom was flooded in the end lucky for us on the last day because the front desk didnt seem to be too interested.

Campeggio Sabbiadoro: by the sea, close to Siracusa and Noto

by picek

Sabbiadoro is small camp near Avola which is town between Siracusa and Noto, by the beach. We've heard good reviews on the campsite before and decided to check it out - if you don't like the place it's still quite easy to leave and try another one if you're by car. But it was really fine - it's shadow from pine trees everywhere, places for tents are landscaped into terraces so it doesn't get really crowded - at least in September we didn't have many neighboors. It's clean camp and feels safe so we didn't feel we have to pack everything any time when we go somewhere around - and on overcast days we were out most of the time. They have lots of cats there, however - and they did came to us every time we set cooking pot outside and they stole our fried fish which we saved for dinner. When it rained they were hidding in our tent and it took some effort to chase them out before they make everything muddy. Beach is behind the wall, sandy and pleasant, views are nice and water is very clear there.
Staff is helpfull and friendly - and laid back; doors are closed at 11 pm and you have to be back by then otherwise it can be difficult to get someone to open the door for you. Also doors to beach will be closed in the night, so no need to worry that someone can enter the camp from there.
In low season we paid about 8 EUR/per + 3 E/car + 9 E for large tent for 4 people.

Hot shower is not for free and you need to buy the coin from the staff.
Alotgether it's really nice place worth a few days stay - especially if you don't like to pack every day and set the tent somewhere again and again. We didn't - you could easily visit interesting places on a day trip and come back for a good sleep, not need to worry about if your car and your stuff are safe.

Villa Diana: Beautiful B&B in southern Sicily

by Beausoleil

Near the the Valley of the Temples we stayed in a fabulous B&B out in the country. It had views from here to eternity; the owner-manager spoke several languages and was absolutely charming. He runs it with his son and daughter-in-law and we just loved it. Large rooms, terrific baths, balconies, views, lots of fresh air . . . highly recommended, especially if you're looking for a little romance.

It was quite reasonable and there were a couple excellent restaurants nearby . . . not to mention the Valley of the Temples.

The web site is in Italian but feel free to e-mail in English (Spanish, German, French) because he will answer in that language.

Hand-embroidered linens from Palermo, balconies overlooking the valley, a glorious Venetian chandelier and huge rooms. We actually had two balconies in our corner room, one on each side.

The breakfast was excellent and best of all, the roads in the area are very good. We wished we had based outselves here since it was so easy to get nearly every place of interest in Sicily easily. Next time we'll know better and spend the entire time at Villa Diana.

Donna Franca: Donna Franca Winery and Inn

by klmousseau

If you go to the Western side near Marsala, we stayed at a great winery, http://www.donnafranca.it/

It's located outside of Marsala, follow the road signs from the highway or check the directions on the website. A little difficult to find, but well worth the effort. Great meal, good service, nice rooms.

Staying in the heart of a vineyard.

Hotel Palladio: Great Location, nice hotel

by Miguelzgz

We stayed there for 3 nights. Giardini Naxos is very, very close to the mega touristic city of Taormina, but it is at the beach. Public transport leads you to Taormina. The bus stop is right at the door of the hotel.

Every room is diferent, and the views are fantastic. The sea, and when it is clear you can see mainland Italy from there.
They serve free "aperitivo" for guests at 18:30(free food, not the cocktail).

Breakfast is included and it is worthy. Lots of diferent things.

It was low season and we payed 73 euros per night.

Villa Sammarco: Villa rental - Casteldaccia

by travelmama

I travelling in a group of 4 or more -- it worked to our advantage to rent a villa/apartment style property. We had indoor and out kitchen, garden, 4 bedrooms and 2 bath. Ample room to relax. Walking distance to square, markets. Directly accross street - bakery- fresh bread daily.
