climbing to the crater
by cbeaujean
4 hours to climb
1 hour (or one night) at the summit
2 hours to come back
for more security, advisable to take a local guide.... not a sentimental stroll,at all!928m high...and at the very end, thin volcanic sand and stones:one step forward, two steps back!
at the top, what a reward!awesome and explosive "son et lumiere",produced by nature itself!
ginostra, the smallest harbour in the world!
by cbeaujean
a harbour which can shelter only one small boat!
through it,forward goods,mail ...and passengers.
arriving here from ferry or aliscafi, you have to take an other small boat to reach the harbour itself!
ginostra has 35 inhabitants,5 of them, children with their own school!
Isola Stromboli

I still remember the excitement of catching my first view of the plumes of smoke and debris exiting this volcanic lump in the middle of the sea. I mean, I've seen a volcano before - even stood on the crater - but this one looks like the real mccoy. It is awe inspiring. Respect!

Stromboli - You'll never forget in your life
by gubbi1
Stromboli is one of the eolic Islands located between Sicilia and the italian mainland. This group of Islands are also called Liparic Island. All of them have a vulcanic origin, of which Stromboli has the typical form of a vulcano. It is one of the most active vulcanos with frequent eruptions on a base of 8 to 20 minutes, throwing out magma in a parabolic curve. This gave the name to this type of vulcanos on the world, strombolian. See the link, which describes it in more detail.
To access the island it is best to take the ferry from Melazzo or Messina. The whole trip takes some time (I think it was about 1 hour) cause you stop at different islands. But it also is something nice cause you pass by some really nice rocky islands (see my motto... :)) )
To see more about the island, check out the two travelogues, of which one shows the village on Stromboli and the other gives you the chance to experience the breathtaking power of the earth....
