Can you identify this building?

by brother_unknown

Its outside facade is covered with dozens of bird statues in groups. I've posted a photo at http://phillipgood.info/birds.jp

why dont you post that pic on VT ?
the link/webadress does not exist anyway !

It works if you stick a 'g' at the end (for jpg).

But it's just a photo of a balcony with various modern ?heron? statues attached to its railings. It's very difficult to identify a particular building from a picture of just one balcony/set of railings (and a tiny bit of the surrounding stonework).

Perhaps a Palermo-based VT-er will wander by the forum......

Other balconies on this same building have other groups and genera of birds.

Could be Noto as close in the Vendicari area you could find those birds...

Travel Tips for Palermo

Street food

by marktbike

Palermo's local customs include enjoying food, a peculiar kind of food. Meals you can have while walking in the narrow streets of the ancient city center. There you can find people with small vehicles (the Italian Piaggio Ape) equipped for cooking and heating "panelle" and "sfincione". If you visit the street market called "Vucciria" don't miss the opportunity to taste the boiled octopus. "Quarume" and "frittula" are to be easily found in the market called "Capo", they are not what we call light food!
Watermelons can always be bought and tasted in the right season (from June to August) and they are sold ice-cold to help people to bear the tropical temperatures of the Sicilian summer. Enjoy...

Good central trattoria

by toonsarah about La Vecchia Locanda

We had lunch in this pleasant trattoria just off the Via Roma. The service was friendly and the general atmosphere welcoming, and I thought the prices were reasonable for such a central location. I had a large house salad (rocket, mushrooms, prosciutto, cherry tomatoes, parmesan and mozzarella) and Chris had pasta con funghi. With his beer and my mineral water, plus bread (which was excellent) and service charge we paid about 20 Euros.

In addition to the nicely decorated interior there are some tables in the small square outside - even in November the southerly aspect meant they caught the midday sun and were nearly warm enough to tempt us!

Mondello--beach town outside Palermo

by Lcannar

This is a very beautiful beach and town only 20 minutes from Palermo. I'm sure it's packed in July and August, but in April, it was sleepy. There are very rich homes and tree-lined streets. Lots of cafes and eateries for all price ranges. It has a white-sandy, clean beach and crystal clear water.

"Palermo is fun"

We loved Palermo. Warnings from travel books and internet forums describe Palermo as dangerous and filled with pickpockets. Even the wonderful people of Palermo kept telling us how to carry our bags so we wouldn't be robbed. We never were, and never felt unsafe.

It is a city filled with energy! The tiny cobbled streets no bigger than alleys were busy with scooters, most carrying more than 1 occupant. No one wears helmets, although we were told that it is the law, even in Palermo. They just ignore it.
