If you fancy staying somewhere a little bit away from the noise and bustle of the city, the Genoardo Park Hotel could be what you’re looking for. This is a modern hotel but built in the style of a traditional noble Sicilian court. This style softens what could otherwise be a rather cold atmosphere as the hotel is large and sprawling, and you end up feeling welcomed and relaxed. This is helped by the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff.

Our room was a good size, with a huge bed and a great view of the valley and other hills beyond. There's a pool, though this was closed when we visited in November, a bar (with OK prices considering the style and 4 star rating of the hotel) and a restaurant. The included breakfast was fine, though the choice wasn't extensive - we didn't have dinner here but I have a feeling it would have been a lot dearer than the tavernas of nearby Monreale, even allowing for the cab fare.

Although the address given is Monreale it’s actually a short drive, bus or cab ride away in the residential area of Aquino. The hotel provides a shuttle bus service to the centre of Palermo twice a day (free of charge) and at other times or to other destinations by arrangement (and with a charge).

    Gabriella's gorgeous garden

Turning into the pine-tree lined road leading to the gates of Piana dei Colli and arriving at the gates where a giant Moreton Bay fig towers over the courtyard that fronts the villa, we knew we'd arrived at a pretty special place, an impression that was well and truly confirmed by both the beautiful garden and a house full of books, magazines (mostly gardening ones), pictures and prints, antiques and antiquities. Our large, comfortably furnished room complete with sofa, coffee table, desk and bookshelves as well as the usual bedroom bits was one of two guest rooms on a seperate landing. Our bathroom was not en suite but was for our sole use.
The other room on that floor was smaller and had an en suite bathroom. A third room is also availlable.

Breakfast was served on the terrace, a fine spread of the usual Italian morning fare - breads and pastries, home made preserves, fruit (delicious melon and peaches), juices, coffee and tea. Eggs were also available but we passed on those as the rest was more than enough.

The villa is actually in Mondello, a beachside town a few kilometres north of Palermo. It was such a lovely place to come back to after a day's sightseeing, to relax for a while in the garden before heading out for dinner in Mondello, itself an attractive mix of rather grand seaside villas, a long sandy beach lined with beach huts and umbrellas and brightly painted small fishing boats.

There is a minimum requirement of 3 night's stay in July and August and 2 nights the rest of the year. Children under 6 are not accepted as guests - with an open staircase and the house so full of family treasures you can understand why.
Cash is the preferred method of payment.

Would I stay here again? Most definitely

Built in the 17th century by the Bourbon king, Ferdinando IV, for his mistress, the Villa Castelforte is now divided into several apartments, one of which is the Il Glicine B&B. Our upstairs bedroom looked over the courtyard but the entrance to the B&B is at the back, through the garden Gabriella Pucci has created in what was once the estate's lemon grove. It really is a little slice of paradise, full of wonderful plants, winding paths, two very well-behaved dogs, and a friendly tortoise.

Gabriella was a delightful hostess, a fund of information and conversation about places to see, parking in Palermo, Sicilian history, archaeology, gardening - her restaurant recommendations were excellent too.

We arrived ferragosto for 8 days, The room had no view and in fact had absolute no daylight at night . The bathroom was immaculate the bedroom slightly less so - when I went to take my case to check out it was thick on the underside with dust and ooze! Breakfast was OK but seemed a bit mean that you have to pay for your second cup of tea or coffee! Also i am not a fan of long life milk with cereals. Room was very quiet so a good sleep every night. With no remote for the Air Conditioning, you will have to climb a chair to switch it on and off.
Free internet point was available outside our room, number 9.

Note in the picture the hotel is the BLUE SIGN to the right of the larger brown sign

Although near the station, the other end of the long Via Roma is a better base, nearer the Teatro Poilteama and Piazza Castelnuovo

Also be aware that a side street between the hotel and the station appears to be the red light district!

Really only worth 5/10 (with a little more effort could be a lot better), so I'll give it 3 out of 5 and flag up a warning that they DO NOT TAKE CREDIT CARDS despite my using a credit card to guarantee the room

  • After seeing a review of this place here on VT, and being amused by the...er...different website, I booked 5 nights here. It's the only B&B I've encountered that asks for your interests as part of your reservation. The B&B itself is a converted apartment, with three bedrooms housing up to six people, a kitchen, two bathrooms, and a small breakfast/sitting room. It's pleasant, with nice, spacious rooms, all kept in excellent condition. It's in a decent location, only a few minutes walk from the main streets of the old city of Palermo, the Palazzo Reale, the Cattedrale. And it's only a few minutes walk from Orleans train station. But what really makes the place is Giorgio's enthusiasm. He makes a real effort to make you feel welcome, picking you up from the train station (if you go to the right station, unlike us ;)) and offering you advice and free tours. On our first night he drove us to nearby Mondello to look around and try some Sicilian foods. Later on he took us on a walking tour of Palermo by night. He provides a level of service above that which you'd expect without being intrusive, and is good company to boot. It's a very good place to stay, and *very* reasonably priced.

We stayed 5 nights at Ai Paladini in Palermo. It is very central (few minutes from Quattro Canti), rooms are big and clean. The owner, Claudia prepared delicious breakfast every morning. She is very kind. The price was 60 EUR/room in Sept. I highly recommend it, I think this is one of the best accomodation choice in Palermo.

Giorgio's house is one of the most interesting places I've stayed in. It's basically a converted apartment block with 3 bedrooms in a building in a great location in the centre of Palermo. We knew this would be a different type of place when we were booking and he offered us a discount if we sent in poems from our countries!!

What really makes this place special is the host, Giorgio. The amount of work he puts in to entertaining guests is exceptional. On our second night there he took us out to Mondello to walk along the seafront and sample some typical Sicilian food. It was a really fun evening and we got to know an older couple from belgium who were also staying in the house. Giorgio also made us a fantastic breakfast with the best coffee I had over the entire trip (and that is really saying something!). On our last day he even dropped us to our station to catch the train to the airport. And all this was only 40 Euro per night -the cheapest place we stayed over two weeks but by far the most memorable.

We used this resort hotel for years when it was run by the DiMartino family. We loved it.
Apart from the main dining room, there was a rooftop ala carte restaurant. Two swimming pools on different levels, the bottom pool reached via stepped gardens and terraces. Full bar service at the top pool with a small chickee bar on the bottom deck. There is a hotel shop and hairdresser's. Being a resort hotel, everything here revolves around the pool deck. In the evenings there would be traditional Sicilian dancing, puppet theatre(the tradition is sadly being lost), or Tony would play piano while we sipped concktails. There was even a night club
This is a very lazy holiday venue. We haven't been for years, so can't comment on its present status
